“In today’s world, with so much information coming at us, it’s essential to gather evidence, quantify it and explain it clearly, and that’s where statistics plays a big role,” said Debajyoti Sinha, a professor in the Florida State University Department of Statistics who's spent more than 30 years researching complex public health problems, especially cancer survival.

“Representing Florida State University in the first Cech Fellows class to me is both an honor and a responsibility because now I am representing FSU on the global neuroscience research stage.”

Congratulations to Sebastian Ruiz, a senior in the Florida State University Department of Statistics who was selected for the inaugural cohort of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's competitive Cech Fellows Program!

While at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Janelia Research Campus — located just 30 miles outside of Washington, D.C. — Ruiz will investigate how AI can improve our understanding of neural networks.

Ruiz is also one of four FSU students selected this year for the Barry Goldwater Scholarship, a national honor recognizing outstanding students pursuing research careers in the sciences, engineering and mathematics.
