What Historic Preservation Gets Wrong

Some great ideas

The tools and approaches used in the preservation field are increasingly out of date, and we risk alienating those who should share our cause.

Stumbled upon this while researching something else REALLY BIG that was going on in Tampa in late 1927. Eben E. Cone was related to J.L. Cone, founder of Cone Construction for whom the Rainbow Bridge at Fairyland was dedicated. Cone Construction built the bridge at no cost to the city. Rex Gordon

Historic Preservation Advocacy Lacking In Jacksonville?

An excellent article that has lessons that can apply to Tampa as well.

Recently approved demolitions of historic structures downtown, including City Hall and Gulf Life, demonstrate an old pattern resurfacing in Jax - tearing down historic structures in a “wait and see” strategy or for a project that represents the antithesis of a vibrant downtown, a surface parking...

Morris Hylton III: Destroying history — the demolition of St. Michael's church

"Every great city in the world uses historic preservation as a development tool. Rehabilitating and adaptively using existing buildings economically benefits communities in a variety of ways while helping them retain their sense of place."

St. Michael’s Episcopal Church opened 43 years ago on Christmas Eve. Located at the corner of Northwest 23rd Avenue and 43rd Street, many

Christmas in Florida - always a conflict for northerners!

Passing along a message:
"The Tampa Bay Chapter of the AIA and TBFAD are planning to hold a Tampa Mayoral Candidate Forum on Tuesday, January 8 from 6-7:30pm at their offices on 1315 East 7th Avenue. The Forum's purpose is to increase the awareness of the mayoral candidates about the issues of architecture, historic preservation and to have them experience thoughtful redevelopment in their visit to the AIA offices in Ybor City.
The candidates will have a meet and greet opportunity and then briefly ( 2 minutes each) present their thoughts to the assembled group.
We would love to share this forum opportunity with Tampa Preservation, Inc. Your membership could join in this chance to educate these candidates about their concerns for our National Landmark Historic District and Tampa's historic resources!
Please let Tampa Preservation's members know about being part of this timely forum. As you're aware, these candidates' calendars fill up quickly, so we're eager to get their attention in early January and impress upon them the value of Ybor City, architecture and historic preservation."

Hello, I'm giving away these steel casements I salvaged from a historic 1926 Temple Terrace home. Perhaps one of your members would want them for their own historic home? They would also be good to have on hand for a future historically appropriate addition.
