Wet chemical vs dry chemical — kitchen hood suppression explained

Kitchen hood fire suppression systems use wet chemical agents (typically potassium acetate based). Here's why wet chemical is the standard for commercial kitchens:

Dry chemical (ABC powder) knocks down the flame but doesn't cool the grease. Re-flash is almost certain.

Wet chemical does three things:
1. Knock down the flame (rapid smothering)
2. Cool the grease below its auto-ignition temperature (prevents re-flash)
3. Form a foam blanket over the grease surface (starves oxygen)

This is why NFPA 17A specifically requires wet chemical for restaurant hood systems. If a vendor offers you a dry chemical system for a commercial kitchen, they're not following the standard.

ERCES signal testing — the grid test explained

Before installing an ERCES/BDA system, you need a signal test. Here's how it works:

We divide your building into at least 20 grid squares. In each square, we measure the inbound (downlink) and outbound (uplink) radio signal strength from the local public safety radio system.

If any grid square fails (signal below -95 dBm), that area needs antenna coverage. The test results drive the system design — how many antennas, where to place them, how much amplifier gain is needed.

After installation, we re-test every grid square to prove coverage meets the AHJ's minimum. The report goes to the fire marshal for sign-off.

ICON performs grid testing with calibrated equipment and delivers AHJ-ready reports. If your building hasn't been tested yet, schedule it before your next fire marshal inspection.

NFPA 25 requires an internal inspection of sprinkler piping every 5 years. This means opening a representative sample of branch lines and mains to check for corrosion, debris, scale, and obstructions.

If you've never had this done, you're not alone — most building owners don't know it's required. But ignoring it means:

• Corroded pipes that restrict water flow
• Debris that can plug a sprinkler head when it needs to operate
• Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) that eats pipe from the inside

Addressable vs conventional fire alarm systems — which does your building need?

If you're renovating or building new, this is one of the first fire protection decisions you'll make.

Conventional systems zone devices by wire — when an alarm triggers, you know which zone, but not which specific device. Good for small buildings with simple layouts.

Addressable systems give every device a unique ID. The panel tells you exactly which smoke detector, pull station, or heat detector activated — down to the room. Faster response, easier troubleshooting, and much lower false-alarm risk.

For multi-story office, retail, or residential: addressable is almost always the right call. The cost difference has shrunk dramatically in the last 5 years.

Fire pump weekly churn test — why you run it and what to look for

If your building has a fire pump, you're required to run a weekly churn test (no-flow test). NFPA 25 says 10 minutes for electric pumps, 30 minutes for diesel.

The point isn't just to 'run the pump.' You're checking:
• Pump starts automatically on pressure drop
• Pump runs without abnormal noise or vibration
• Packing box leakage is within limits (10-60 drops/minute is normal)
• Bearing temperatures are normal
• Pressure gauge readings are consistent with baseline
• For diesel: oil pressure, water temp, battery charge

We see too many building owners skip this or do it wrong. The weekly churn is your early warning system — if the pump won't start when you test it, it won't start in a fire.

Backflow prevention on fire sprinkler systems — why your water utility cares

Your fire sprinkler system is connected to the city water supply. Without a backflow preventer, stagnant water from your sprinkler pipes could flow backwards into the drinking water system.

That's why Texas water utilities require backflow prevention devices on every fire sprinkler connection — and annual testing to verify they work.

Types we test:
• Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) — highest protection, required for most commercial systems
• Double Check Valve Assembly (DCVA) — moderate protection, some jurisdictions accept
• Detector Check — for fire service lines with metered bypass

ICON is licensed to test and repair backflow preventers in Texas. We file the test results directly with your water utility so you don't have to.

If you received a 'backflow test due' notice from your city, call us. We'll get it handled.

Restaurant kitchen hood suppression — the 6-month service you can't skip

If you operate a commercial kitchen, your hood suppression system must be serviced every 6 months. Not annually. Every 6 months. Per NFPA 17A.

Why so frequent? Because kitchen grease builds up fast. Between inspections, the fusible links that trigger the system can become grease-coated, the nozzles can become obstructed, and the wet chemical agent can settle.

Our 6-month service includes:
• Replace fusible links
• Clean and verify nozzle alignment
• Check blow-off caps
• Verify tank pressure/weight
• Test automatic and manual actuation
• Inspect gas/electric shut-off interface
• Tag the system with service date

If your last service tag is more than 6 months old, you're out of compliance — and your insurance company may not pay if a fire occurs.

What is ERCES and why does your building need it?

ERCES = Emergency Responder Communication Enhancement System. Formerly called BDA (Bi-Directional Amplifier) systems.

When firefighters enter your building, their radios need to work. But modern building construction — concrete, low-e glass, steel framing — blocks radio signals. If a firefighter on the 4th floor can't reach command on the ground, lives are at risk.

ERCES solves this by installing a distributed antenna system (DAS) that boosts public safety radio signals throughout the building. Most AHJs now require it for new construction and major renovations.

Key requirements:
• Signal strength test before and after installation
• Battery backup (12-hour minimum)
• Monitoring by the fire alarm system
• Annual inspection and testing

Wet vs dry sprinkler systems — which does your building need?

If your facility is in Texas and unheated (warehouse, parking garage, outdoor loading dock), a dry pipe system is probably your answer. Dry systems use pressurized air instead of water in the pipes, so they don't freeze.

Wet systems are faster (water is right there at the head), cheaper to install, and lower maintenance. But in a Texas February freeze, that water turns to ice and you've got a real problem.
