Nicolás Maduro looks dramatically different in the first known photos of him behind bars since U.S. forces captured him in Caracas.

The ousted Venezuelan leader appears noticeably thinner as he smiles and flashes peace signs inside Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center, where he has spent eight months awaiting trial on drug trafficking charges.

Maduro insists he and his wife remain "strong, serene, and confident" as both plead not guilty and face potential life sentences if convicted.

The photos surface just days after President Trump announced a major U.S.-Venezuela oil agreement giving the U.S. majority control over 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan reserves.
