Temecula NACE ASM ASCE Chapter / Section

We are going to try and start a combo professional association for ASM, ASCE and NACE members living or working in the Temecula region. We need to get the word out to engineers and technicians in the area.

Dear Western States Corrosion Seminar Members and seminar attendees,

Western States Corrosion Seminar's planning team is closely monitoring the status of Coronavirus (COVID-19) and following advice and guidance from the CDC and local/state agencies. At this time, we are very concerned about our May 2020 seminar but the situation is changing daily.

We are taking the social responsibility of this pandemic seriously and do not want to risk the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) or the health of our members and their families and communities. We are currently evaluating all of our options regarding our event.

We are working closely with the hotel, our board of directors and our speakers to ensure safety standards from the WHO, CDC and California state guidelines are followed.

We will update attendees and our membership of any changes as soon as we possibly can. Thank you for your understanding at this time.

Sincerely,

Ed Hernandez, PE
2020 WSCS Chairman

Colonel Gates will show slides and discuss the role of Air Force, Civil Engineering, and contingency forces {Prime BEEF} during the Pueblo Crisis in South Korea.

USS Pueblo (AGER-2) is a Banner-class environmental research ship, attached to Navy intelligence, which was attacked and captured by North Korean forces on 23 January 1968, in what is known today as the Pueblo incident or alternatively, as the Pueblo crisis.

Emphasis will be on the construction from a bare base type situation to the beddown of a "Rapid Reactor" F4 Fighter Squadron at Kwangju Air Base. The beddown construction was accomplished by two Prime BEEF units.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Air Force Prime BEEF units and the RED HORSE squadrons primarily to meet the needs of the Vietnam conflict.

The seizure of the U.S. Navy ship and its 83 crew members, one of whom was killed in the attack, came less than a week after President Lyndon B. Johnson's "State of the Union" address to the United States Congress, just a week before the start of the "Tet Offensive" in South Vietnam during the Vietnam War, and only three days after 31 men of North Korea's "KPA Unit 12" had crossed the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and killed 26 South Koreans in an attempt to attack the South Korean "Blue House" (executive mansion) in the capital Seoul. The taking of Pueblo and the abuse and torture of its crew during the subsequent 11-month prisoner drama became a major Cold War incident, raising tensions between the western democracies and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and People's Republic of China.

At first blush Materials Selection sounds like a relatively easy process. However, the number of variables can rapidly multiply and the simple “walk in the woods” can quickly become a struggle to extract yourself from the quicksand. We will explore what the principle objectives are that you need to consider and how to avoid the quagmire of processing, cost, and design considerations to successfully bring a product to the market, choosing products, and avoid being sued.

Dr. Klug has worked as a cook, machinist, and welder before earning his doctorate at the Colorado School of Mines Steel Research Center in 1989. He has worked in a variety of Metallurgical Engineering positions ranging from large Corporations to small independent consulting firms in fields spanning failure analysis, expert litigation support, quality control, education and technical services. Bob and his wife Sharon moved to San Diego in July 2011 where he presently works with the Materials and Processing Department at Solar Turbines Inc.

Topic:
“Introduction to Insulation Coatings”
By: David Hunter of Mascoat Inc.

Thermal Insulative Coatings (TIC’s) are coating systems which have not only the properties of many traditional coatings systems, but have the added benefit of having properties similar to conventional insulation for temperature and noise control. Although TIC’s have been on the market for over 15 years, their general market acceptance is just coming to fruition. This presentation will compare and contrast insulative coatings with conventional insulation, and describe the uses, features, benefits and limitation of insulative coatings.

David Hunter is Managing Director, SE Asia for Mascoat, a specialty coating manufacturer. During his 18 year career, David has performed application & in-service inspection of coating in 20 different countries, giving him a unique perspective of best practices for corrosion control methods across multiple industries, including Oil & Gas, Pulp & Paper, Power, and Water / Wastewater Industries. A published author in magazines like MP, Coatings Pro & JPCL, Hunter is a Civil Engineer, Protective Coatings Specialist, and an Instructor for both NACE & SSPC corrosion societies.
