Going into 2021, we hope you will support the four key areas of our work for this next year. We are calling these priorities our "Contract for Black America."

Contract for Black America:

Education: Ensure every student of color receives a quality public education that prepares him or her to be a contributing member of a democracy.

Criminal Justice: Create sweeping police reform–federal legislation mandating a zero-tolerance approach in penalizing and/or prosecuting police officers who kill unarmed, non-violent, and non-resisting individuals in an arrest.

Healthcare: Ensure quality affordable health care for all people.

Economic Development: Address the challenging economic realities facing our communities including poverty, lack of jobs and disproportionate high unemployment, lack of affordable housing, foreclosures, etc.

Which resonates most with you?

Items to Remember About Voting in Wisconsin on Election Day.

1) Polls are open from 7 a.m.-8:00 p.m.. If you are in line by 8 p.m. you can vote.

2) You will need an ID to vote. Below is a link with acceptable forms of ID that cover most of us, such as WI driver's license, WI state ID, or certain college IDs. https://my.lwv.org/wisconsin/wisconsin-voter-photo-id

If you moved in the last 28 days from where you last voted, or since you got your license or ID, then you should vote at your new location. Otherwise, go to your old location. If you go to the new location, you must register first with your new address and then go vote. Thus, bring something that proves you live there, such as a utility bill, a bank statement, a lease, work payment stub. Use the following link for more registration information https://my.lwv.org/wisconsin/register-vote.

If you are a new voter in Wisconsin, you must first register on election day and then vote immediately afterward. Use the link above for more registration information.

If you have any specific questions, call the League of Women Voters at (608) 256-0827 or your municipal clerk.

3). Find your polling location at http://www.myvote.wi.gov and click "Where do I vote?".

4). The lines may be long in many places so come prepared to wait (at least the weather should be good).

5) If you still have a mailed absentee ballot you can bring it to your polling location, city hall on election day.

Grand jury indicts former Louisville cop Brett Hankison in Breonna Taylor raid, but no charges related to her shooting death

So, we have seen a financial settlement and now charges related to the raid. Is this justice for Breonna? https://www.cnbc.com/2020/09/23/grand-jury-indicts-louisville-cop-in-death-of-breonna-taylor.html?__source=androidappshare&fbclid=IwAR3wDfKqbfBxtDWJ2dvX9UbiAyYVUmGLDzmLC66dUseJNlitk9Wrg9pWgTc

Breonna Taylor's death, along with the police killing of George Floyd, a Black man, in Minneapolis last spring, catalyzed the protest-driven movement to reform police organization nationwide.

Juneteenth: The Growth of an African American Holiday (1865- ) •

Today is Juneteenth, so named because it combines June and 19th, the date in 1865 when the last slaves --- those in Texas --- learned that they were free. Although news of emancipation came at different times during that Texas summer and autumn 1865, local African Americans gradually settled on June 19 (Juneteenth) as their day of celebration. Beginning in 1866, they held parades, picnics, barbecues, and gave speeches in remembrance of their liberation.

Mequon-Thiensville School District denounces video that appears to show students mocking George Floyd's death

"It's time we stand up to [racism]."

Morgan Limbach, we could not agree more. Thank you for doing the right thing by alerting school officials and starting a petition.

Who else will stand with Morgan against this kind of behavior? https://www.tmj4.com/news/local-news/mequon-thiensville-school-district-issues-statement-regarding-reprehensible-video?fbclid=IwAR136t9KManwnatS87DMpWnGMdp_n_e9vvqgnu0gSurAa2OG-JTqJbCAX2Y

The Superintendent of Mequon-Thiensville Schools says the district is investigating what he calls a “reprehensible” video showing two students who attend schools in the district, appearing to mock the death of George Floyd. A third student recorded the video.

Do body-worn cameras improve police behavior?

When situations are extreme, it's easy to want a magic answer; however, it's important to be thoughtful about how we move forward. For instance, some people have called for patrol offices to be required to wear body cameras at all times while on duty. This may be a great start. However, research by Dr. Jennifer Doleac and others found that when scholars conducted randomized trials and looked at existing footage, "The behavior of officers who wore cameras all the time was indistinguishable from the behavior of those who never wore cameras." Indistinguishable! Doleac and others found that department policies, officers' predispositions to violence, whether officers believe that the conduct was unacceptable, and how long before footage is released all have an impact on behavior. To put it another way, the requirement to wear bodycams must be supplemented with other appropriate policies and training. Complex problems require complex solutions.

The cost for police using body-worn cameras may be outweighing the benefit.

With so much going on out there, there's a lot of information to be digested. Because each NAACP chapter hosts a Freedom Fund fundraiser, we have received questions about the Minnesota Freedom Fund and whether to donate.

The Minnesota Freedom Fund is not the same thing as our Freedom Fund fundraiser dinners. It is, however, a fund that pays (or helps pay) bail for low-income individuals. Most states have some version of this kind of fund. The Minnesota Freedom Fund has an updated Twitter page and a great website, so you can check there for more information.

Give where you are moved to give.

The 17-year-old boy, Kyle Rittenhouse, takes a rifle to Kenosha, Wisconsin to defend what??? Who drove him there? The police give him and other so-called white mob OR "militia" bottles of water. The police never challenged Rittenhouse by saying, "Son, how old are you? Let me see your I.D. Hey, you're a 17-year-old, why are you carrying a rifle? Why are you out disobeying curfew because we police officers can handle things here in Kenosha?" No, the cops "sanctioned" Rittenhouse and other "pure" white defenders of "justice and truth" against those horrible subhuman protesting MOBS who are all looters, arsonists, vandals, and anarchists. Trump and POX News stereotypes all protestors as thugs and terrorists. The only holy and righteous protestors are white militia and Trump supporters. Right? DEAD WRONG! Kyle Rittenhouse was NOT supposed to be out with a rifle at his age...it's illegal...he's not 18. But Rittenhouse is supposed to be out there defending white property from looters and vandals. BUT that's not his freaking job!!! He's not a law enforcer OR National Guard member. Who deputized a 17-year-old boy? Is the Kenosha police department that desperate to deputize a 17-year-old kid? Is Rittenhouse a junior G-man pretending to be a law enforcer like the racist white men who murdered Ahmaud Arbery??? And Trump supporters (some of them) think he's a "hero?" And WHEN did Rittenhouse defend himself? Was it AFTER he murdered a person? AFTER he actually saw people vandalize a store OR set a business on fire? Rittenhouse's lawyers are gonna say this poor little innocent white boy was just being a patriot and defending against those beastly Black Lives Matter thugs. At 17, this prick should've been home watching his usual family entertainment such as Chicago P.D., Dog the Racist Bounty Hunter, KKK Cops, Dirty Harry, Netflix, or whatever! Rittenhouse murdered 2 people; he's a vigilante that has watched too many superhero movies and dispises the Black Lives Matter Movement (perhaps like his racist KKK parents). The police chief of Kenosha should be fired because he was complicit and colluded with that white mob/militia. This white mob was "unofficially deputized" to deal with protestors and rioters. Kyle Rittenhouse should get at least 30 years in prison for murdering 2 human beings! [IF I had my way, by the time Rittenhouse got out of prison, he'd be 300 years old!] END TRUMP'S RACISM...BIDEN / HARRIS 2020
