Conejo Recreation and Park District To enrich the quality of life for our community by preserving & enhancing recreational opportunities

The Conejo Recreation and Park District is a public service agency created by the people through the use of government structure for the purpose of providing recreational opportunities for all citizens, educating for the proper use of leisure time, and conserving the recreational resources of the area. The District operates several community parks and centers, neighborhood parks, special facilitie

s, special recreation units, and thousands of acres of open space. As an arm of the government, the major responsibility is to serve as a catalyst for community effort by employing the tools and powers of the District, promoting inter-agency cooperation, and constructing and operating facilities which are beyond the reach of individual or private organization effort. The District complements private or commercial recreation efforts and conducts its business in a manner that flows in and around these efforts to provide the community and the individual with a complete set of recreational opportunities.

Youth and Adult Sports are a major priority for our community! Many residents would like expanded opportunities to participate in classes, leagues, and tournaments.

Our Sports Department is constantly evaluating the needs of our community by surveying parents and athletes on what sports are more in demand. They also reevaluate existing classes and leagues and restructure them to accommodate changes in our community.

CRPD Sports concentrates on hiring trained and certified instructors to teach classes and provide a variety of camps. They also continue to develop partnerships with local sports organizations. Many residents shared that protecting our environment was their primary concern. Preserving wildlife, using native plants, and saving water was all important to Conejo Valley residents. The Grounds and Maintenance staff have worked very hard to continue to conserve water by alternative landscaping with drought tolerant plants, and technological advances and improvements such as:
• Irrigation Control: catching leaks before they become a problem. You can help! Report park sprinkler problems and concerns by participating in our Do Report Irrigation Problems (D.R.I.P.) Water Watcher Program by clicking the water conservation link below.
• Increasing trained staff in testing irrigation systems which results in accuracy and saving water

Posted • The City of Thousand Oaks acknowledges and celebrates Black History Month. Black History Month spans from February 1 through March 1 annually. It is a time to celebrate and reflect on the contributions of Black individuals and communities throughout history and elevate their voices and experiences.

Since 1976, each President of the United States has designated February as Black History Month while denoting a theme. The 2023 theme is 'Black Resistance,' which explores historical resistance and ongoing oppression in Black communities.

Here are some ideas to thoughtfully honor Black History Month this year.

We are one of 5 organizations that have voiced our support for appropriate election by-division maps to be adopted by Conejo Recreation and Park District. The move to by-division was triggered by a notice received from Shenkman & Hughes, a law firm that advocates for local agencies to move away from At-Large seats to by area, division, or district seats. More information is posted on the Conejo Together website. CT has also signed on as has Buen Vecino, Adelante Comunidad Conejo, and Ventura County Autism Society. What do we all have in common? A desire to see people of lower income, non-white race, language other than English, apartment dwelling housing, and those living with disabilities to have their voices heard. When we hear those voices, we end up with cities that work for everyone. Please go to https://www.conejotogether.com/current-issues for more detailed information. The CRPD meeting is tomorrow (Thursday) evening. It looks like the vote may be pushed to Feb 2nd now that they are meeting tomorrow in closed session to consider "threat of litigation" from Shenkman.
The mission of kidSTREAM Children's Museum is to provide an engaging environment where kids explore, play, and discover. We are excited to announce the recent appointment of Charleen Morla-Garcia, from Conejo Recreation and Park District, and Jonathan Solórzano-Hamilton, from Netflix, as new members on our board of directors. Both Charleen and Jonathan also bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the organization, which are valuable to our team as we prepare to open to the public in late 2023.

Charleen is a lifelong resident of Ventura County, with over 20 years experience in marketing, design, and event planning. When asked about her motivation for joining the board, she shared that, “as a mother to an active and ever-so imaginative 4-year-old, we have been driving great distances to visit similar museums that give him a chance to explore, imagine, and be inspired. I am excited and honored to be a part of the team at kidSTREAM to make this happen for future generations and families in our community and beyond.”

Jonathan has over 20 years of experience in software engineering and engineering leadership and previously helped found the sustainability-focused nonprofit, SunWork Renewable Energy Projects. Reflecting on his own childhood experiences, Jonathan shared that, “childhood visits to the Exploratorium Science Museum gave me my passion for science, and are why I chose to study physics. I hope to spark the same joy in those who visit our museum.”

Get to know our growing team by visiting www.kidstream.org, and learn how you can join in supporting us, as we set out to inspire and empower kids to become critical thinkers, innovators, and life-long learners.
