Meet Our Members: Captain Jason Anderson

It isn’t every day you meet a leader who has dedicated nearly half his life to the fire service. Today, we are proud to feature Captain Jason Anderson, a cornerstone of the Tiller Fire District.

Jason’s journey began 11 years ago when he joined the fire service as a Cadet at age 13. He brought that passion and experience to Tiller 7 years ago, and today he serves as our Captain. His path from an EMR to a newly licensed Paramedic is a testament to his drive to provide the highest level of care to our residents and visitors.

Jason’s impact on Tiller goes far beyond the emergency calls. He has been instrumental in modernizing our district behind the scenes by: Successfully obtaining funding for vital new equipment like our new ambulance and extrication tools to ensure our community has the best resources available; Revamping and updating our training programs to keep our crew sharp and ready for any situation; And expanding our reach within the community, making sure Tiller Fire is a visible and trusted presence for all our neighbors.

Jason’s commitment to Southern Oregon is tireless. When he isn't leading here in Tiller, he is
serving as a Full-Time Shift Officer/Paramedic for the Evans Valley Fire District, working as a part-time Medic for the Glendale Ambulance District, or volunteering for several other departments throughout Southern Douglas County and the South County Rescue Team. Did we mention he also did 3 seasons with DFPA?

From a 13-year-old cadet to a Paramedic Captain, Jason’s 11 years of service have been defined by a "community-first" mindset. We are incredibly fortunate and grateful to have his expertise, his leadership, and his vision at the Tiller Fire District.
Please join us in thanking Captain Anderson for his dedication and for everything he does to keep our valley safe!

Meet Our Members: Pieter Theron
This week, we are kicking off our new series with a bittersweet tribute to an exceptional member who has served the Tiller community for seven years: Pieter Theron!
Pieter has truly been an invaluable asset to both the Tiller and Milo Fire Districts and the entire South Umpqua community. His dedication goes far beyond the fire hall.
Pieter has been an integral part of our team, serving the Tiller Fire District and community in three vital roles:
Volunteer Firefighter, Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), and Chaplain.
He also provides crucial support as a Chaplain for the Southern Oregon Public Safety Chaplains and serves as the beloved Pastor at the South Umpqua Community Church. His commitment to caring for the physical and spiritual well-being of our residents and visitors is a rare and powerful gift.
While we celebrate his amazing contributions, we are incredibly sad to announce that Pieter and his wonderful wife, who has been a tremendous supporter of our department and community, are moving back to South Africa to be closer to their family and adult children.
Please join us in thanking Pieter and his wife for their countless hours of service and selfless dedication. We wish them safe travels and all the very best on this new chapter.

Thank you, Pieter! You will be missed.

DFPA NEWS RELEASE
2025 FIRE SEASON ENDS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2025

The Douglas Forest Protective Association (DFPA) will officially end the 2025 fire season today, Friday, October 10, 2025, at 9:01 a.m., for lands under their protection and management. The end of fire season is a result of recent wetting rains and an overall cooling trend that has returned to the area.

With the end of the fire season, the public and industrial fire restrictions implemented through DFPA will no longer be in effect.

A list of fire restrictions and closures in place through private industrial landowners can be found online at https://ofic.com/private-forestland-closures/.

Backyard debris burning outside of incorporated cities will be allowed without a burn permit from DFPA; however, residents should contact their local fire department before conducting any debris burning, as fire restrictions may vary between local fire districts. The only type of burning that requires a permit from DFPA outside of fire season is for the burning of logging slash. Any commercial tree harvest that requires excess debris to be burned constitutes logging slash and, therefore, requires a burn permit. Permits to burn logging slash can be obtained by calling DFPA at 541-672-6507.

Despite the fire season ending, fire officials advise residents to exercise caution when burning yard debris or using fire in the woods. Several days of sunshine and dry weather during the fall months can create a fire risk even if a week or more of cool, wet conditions precede them.

When burning yard debris, ensure you have an adequate fire trail around the pile before ignition begins, and have fire tools and a water supply at the burn site. Debris piles should never be left unattended and should be fully extinguished before leaving the area. If a debris burn escapes containment, the party responsible may be held financially responsible for the resulting fire suppression costs and associated damages.

Those recreating in wildland areas are reminded that private industrial landowners and neighboring public land management agencies may still have fire restrictions or closures in place on the lands they own or manage. Recreationists should check with the appropriate landowner or public land management agency for the location they plan to recreate before heading to the woods.
The Douglas Forest Protective Association would like to thank the community for its cooperation and support during the 2025 fire season.

Today was a day to remember those who lost their lives on 9/11. 24 years ago 441 first responders died in the attacks, including 343 firefighters, 71 law enforcement officers, and 8 paramedics. An additional 2,536 civilians lost their lives that day.

Today a couple of your Tiller Fire District volunteers traveled to Eugene, OR to take part in the 3rd annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Autzen Stadium. 2,200 steps, 110 floors were climbed in honor of the 343 firefighters who answered their last call that day.

Each firefighter climbed in the name of a fallen firefighter, carrying their memory with every step. At the 78th floor, a bell was rung to mark the highest point reached before the towers fell, a solemn reminder of their courage and sacrifice.

We climb SO they are never forgotten.

Thanks to the Oregon State Fire Marshal and the summer staffing grant. Your Tiller Fire District volunteers have been staffing our main station during Fire Season in order to have quicker response times and increased personnel for emergencies. This has proven to be successful on multiple occasions so far.

This weekend your Tiller Volunteers have been staffing the Fire Station and a Medical Station at the South Umpqua Falls Campground during the Cow Creek Tribal Pow Wow. Today Tiller Fire District was able to staff with 6 personnel. We had 3 personnel at the Medical Station with our medical vehicle and 3 personnel hanging out in Tiller at the Tiller Art Fair with our brush rig, providing fire safety information.
