🐾 Training Update from K9 Rhea

Yesterday, we put in some more work as we continue building length, age, and realistic scenario-based training into my trails.

The scenario was a person with early-onset dementia who left home for a walk and became lost. I was presented with their scent at the residence and tasked with figuring out where they had gone.

The trail was approximately ¾ of a mile, about an hour old, and took me roughly 25 minutes to complete through a residential environment. There were plenty of decisions to make and real-world distractions to work through—including Amazon delivery drivers, dogs barking and moving around in their yards, dogs out on walks, neighborhood activity, traffic, and even a few very sketchy lawn mowers that I definitely had to keep an eye on. 🐕😂

Most of our scenario-based training is blind for my handler—he doesn’t know where the person went or what route they took. He has to trust me, read my behavior, and let me independently work the scent problem from start to finish.

We’re continuing to add distance, age, complexity, distractions, and realistic scenarios to our training. Every problem is a little different, and every trail gives us another opportunity to become a better team for when the call is real.

Don’t worry, Dad. I got eyes on him.

Apparently this is called a “horse.” I’ve been informed that I am not supposed to herd it, chase it, scream at it, or bite its ankles.

So for now, I’m just staring at it professionally and waiting for it to commit a crime. 👀🐴

The humans call this “standing on the couch.” I call it tactical elevation. 🫡🐾

POV: Mom said it was “time to relax.”

Mission misunderstood.

Current objective: become the world’s most awkward lap dog, deploy all four paws into the air, and make sure she can’t move until further notice. Tactical cuddles are a critical part of operational readiness… probably. 🐾😂

Hot Trail vs. Cold Trail

It's Not Just About Time.

When someone goes missing, you may hear search teams talk about a hot trail or a cold trail.

What does that mean?

🔥 Hot Trail

A hot trail is fresh.

The missing person has recently been in the area, leaving behind a strong scent trail. There has been little time for weather, other people, or changing conditions to affect it.

Think of fresh footprints in newly fallen snow.

These trails generally have a stronger scent for a trailing dog to follow.

❄️ Cold Trail

A cold trail has had time to change.

Wind...
Rain...
Sun...
Other people...
Vehicles...
Wildlife...

All of these can alter or contaminate the scent picture.

The trail may be hours, days, or even longer old, requiring the dog to sort through countless distractions while staying committed to the original person's scent.

A cold trail doesn't mean impossible.

It means the puzzle just became much more complex.
