Ken-Ton Closet

Ken-Ton Closet The Ken-Ton Closet is a community project where donated items of daily living are provided to needy children living in Kenmore-Tonawanda at no cost.

According to UNICEF, children in the United States are more likely to live in poverty than those in any other developed nation (http://www.unicef-irc.org/publications/pdf/rc7_eng.pdf). The American Psychological Association reports that children living in poverty are at greater risk for adverse academic outcomes, emotional problems such as depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. In addition, these children may be subjected to poor nutrition, chronic stress and live in unsafe neighborhoods (http://www.apa.org/pi/families/poverty.aspx). Many families are being asked to do more with fewer resources. The free and reduced price lunch (FRPL) program is a federal initiative that provides free or inexpensive lunches to children from low-income families. In the Ken-Ton U.F.S.D., 39% of children receive free or reduced lunch. To further complicate matters, the disparity between schools is wide. While 8 of the District’s 14 programs fall less than the District total, four schools have populations where more than half of the students receive free or reduced lunch (Franklin Elementary, Holmes Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary and the Sheridan School/Big Picture Program). Within the latter, Holmes Elementary has a staggering 85% of their students receiving free or reduced lunch. Throughout the year, Ken-Ton residents donate used clothing to organizations such as Goodwill and Salvation Army. Although these service organizations provide resources to those in need, much of what is collected does not remain in the Ken-Ton community, often times being moved to other towns or the City of Buffalo. Furthermore, despite the low cost of clothing, the expense may still be prohibitive to the families most in need. Lack of appropriate clothing is a very real non-educational barrier to learning and therefore an impediment to success for many of our students. The Ken-Ton Parent Alliance (KTPA) is a volunteer organization in the Ken-Ton community with the mission to inform and empower parents to advocate for the needs of their children. Since its inception in the spring of 2012, the group was recognized by the Board of Education and has grown to over 100 active members. The KTPA believes the answer to at least one problem plaguing children in need is to provide them with clothing and basic necessities free of charge. This can be achieved by creating a system by which donated resources are collected by KTPA/community volunteers and distributed to children by KTPA and other authorized personnel with cooperation from the Town of Tonawanda, Village of Kenmore, Ken-Ton U.F.S.D and other community entities. Children will now not have to worry about how to obtain basic clothing items; they can get help with dignity and discretion. The proposed host location is at the Sheridan Parkside Youth Center. Any child residing in Ken-Ton would be eligible to receive assistance; the child does not have to be enrolled in the public schools of Kenmore-Tonawanda U.F.S.D.

Mission: The primary mission of the Ken-Ton Closet is to directly improve the quality of life for needy children (ages 0 – 18 years) living in the Village of Kenmore/Town of Tonawanda by providing them with items of daily living such as clothing, school supplies, toiletries, and other materials at no cost.

Dear friends -

We wanted to give you an update now that our region has moved to an "Orange" COVID designation. We are continuing normal operations at this time. When we re-opened, we put into place several safety measures to help protect our volunteers and you:

-Everyone who is at the Closet shopping or assisting shoppers must wear a mask. We have masks available for those that do not have one.

-We now require signing up for a time slot. This limits the number of people at the Closet at any given time and ensures we only have one family in each shopping room at a time.

-Carts are used to carry items (instead of a shared table). This is sanitized between customers.

-We have sanitizer available and clean all high touch services with disinfecting wipes and/or bleach. We also have the Protexus system which ensures surfaces are treated in compliance with CDC guidelines.

-We limit the number of people that can come in per family and now restrict children 5 and under from accompanying their parents/guardians.

-We have signage that indicates restrictions (please do not shop if you do not feel well or have a fever).

If we move to red designation, we may make some additional changes including but not limited to increasing the age of children that may attend, decreasing the number of available appointments in a day, and limiting indoor donations. Thank you for understanding!

Tis the season. If you can help make someone’s holiday a little brighter during this tough time you can drop an unwrapped toy off at the Kenmore Police Station or anyone of these locations below. 🎅🎄🎁

Dear friends-

We very much appreciate your donations which keep our program running. Recently we’ve noticed a huge surge in donations we don’t accept so we thought we’d send a few friendly reminders:

-Please make sure all items (clothing, school supplies and toiletries) are bagged.

-Please do not leave items outside of our bins.

-We do NOT accept: stuffed animals, clothing that has stains/holes, baby gear (car seats, strollers, etc), furniture/household goods, used school supplies/toiletries or toys/games that are broken and/or missing pieces.

-We also ask any adult clothing you donate be something that a teenager would wear (jeans, hoodies, T-shirts, etc).

Thank you for reading! This will save our volunteers a lot of time and get things into the hands of those that need them (often we have to throw away things we can use that Hearts for the Homeless or the City Mission can’t take). ✌🏼❤️😃 Please share!

Dear friends, we wanted to share with you an email that recently went out from one of our small local businesses we work with, Colvin Cleaners. Paul and his family have been so wonderful to us over the years, we’d like to return the favor. Every local business is struggling...So whether it’s dropping off something to be dry cleaned, going to a local restaurant or buying something from a family owned business, please shop here and encourage your friends to do so also. These businesses reinvest in their own communities over and over again and we would not be where we are today without their continued support. Thank you!!

Hi:

For years, Colvin Cleaners has given back to WNY through our community programs: Coats 4 Kids and Gowns for Prom. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, we felt it. Dry cleaners were deemed an essential business in New York State as we cleaned and sanitized clothing and uniforms for first responders and hospital employees, but we still had to lay off a number of our employees due to lack of volume.

We are a business that depends on people going out and wearing clothing to work, restaurants or social gatherings. When all of that went on pause, so did most of our incoming business. But, as an essential business, we were required to stay open -- so we did.

And we did not stop our philanthropic efforts. We brought back most of our tailors and started making washable, reusable face masks and gave them away for free to our customers. We have now donated masks to dozens of nonprofits and are responsible for 35,000+ masks distributed to people in WNY. And in 2020, we have still continued donating time and money to 400+ local WNY charities.

You can learn more about that story and our #GetAMaskGiveAMask program here.

COATS 4 KIDS | As the 25th anniversary of Coats 4 Kids approaches this Fall/Winter, we are asking that nonprofits coordinate with us to receive coats, hats, scarves, gloves, and boots to distribute to the communities they serve. If your nonprofit would like to participate, you can learn more and sign up here.

CAN YOU HELP? | Please share this and recommend our dry cleaning and laundry service to your database. We offer FREE Pick Up & Delivery all over WNY and we are the only environmentally-friendly dry cleaner in WNY so our cleaning methods are safer for your skin, your clothes, and the environment.

Thank you for your support, and for your referrals. Stay safe & well,

Paul

Dear friends in Sheridan Parkside… This evening our local police department is hosting a talk to discuss concerns and ways to improve community policing in your neighborhood. Please share this and spread the word about this great opportunity!

Join the Town of Tonawanda police tonight (October 20, 2020) at the NOCO Pavilion located at 450 Ensminger Rd. for our 3rd Park Talk meeting, starting at 6:30PM. The mission of these meetings is to have a fact-based and honest dialogue about the public safety needs of your community. Members of the community are given an opportunity to discuss what they envision is the most appropriate and effective role of the police in their respective neighborhoods. In order to follow the COVID guidelines, everyone is required to wear a mask during the meeting. If you do not have one we will be happy to provide one for you. Hope to see you there!

Dear friends, we have had a few individuals/organizations reach out to us regarding helping families this holiday season. If you know of local resources that are coordinating efforts, can you please comment below or send us a PM? We are going to check with the town and the school district to see which services they will still be providing because of the pandemic. Your help is greatly appreciated.

So this is finally happening!!! A huge shout out to Pastor Eric Napoli for hooking us up with Hearts for the Homeless on the outside bin donation. We will be working on decals over the next few weeks and we appreciate our landlord Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Union Free School District’s B&G crew for laying down the concrete pad and hooking us up with a company that could paint our bin. This was all made possible by the East Hill Foundation ...So grateful for their help. Something definitely out of reach for us without their grant support. And I’m sure they are ready for us to finalize our paperwork. 😂

Kenmore Pub Crawl

We know everything looks different this year because of COVID, including the cancelation of the annual Kenmore Pub Crawl. We were honored to be considered as the charity of choice when they moved forward with selling tshirts and hoodies. We will use this $300 to buy more baby kits because we are running low. For those of you that don’t know, any family with children 2 or under get these grooming/safety kits when register with us. They include a thermometer, nail clippers, bull syringe, etc. Thank you to Larry, the rest of the KPC crew and all who purchased gear for your continued support!

Thanks to everyone who ordered 2020 Pub Crawl apparel! Your orders are in the mail today! I’m happy to announce we raised $300 for the Ken-Ton Closet 👍🏼 Thanks again and let’s hope we can crawl in 2021!

As many of you know, we have two large events during the year: our meat raffle in the spring and our pub crawl in the fall. Because of COVID related restrictions, we are unable to host our usual good time event in September. 😭

However, our friends at the Kenmore pub crawl have partnered with Identity Ink T-shirts to offer a fundraiser for us instead. For every purchase the closet will get $10 back. Please consider purchasing something and feel free to share with your friends! ❤️👚👕

Is there a special time you would like volunteers tomorrow morning?
Just an idea to consider if you will. When you are able to open back up, could you consider having a few times when we could drop off our donations to Jefferson just like Ken ton cares drop off. This would save your volunteers time from pick up at totes which would fill so very quickly. Thank you.
while this doesn't have to do with the closet, I recently found a great site honoring our high school seniors. It allows a community members to adopt a senior, which basically entails sharing a few fun things with them trying to cheer them up in this tough time (they are missing out on a lot) a fun tee-shirt about quarantine, a grad book, something more personal... MY issue is only that there may be seniors who get missed, for various reasons. I was hoping this site and the pantry could get the word out.https://www.facebook.com/gro…/265353844635979/announcements/
