Ken-Ton Closet

Ken-Ton Closet The Ken-Ton Closet is a community project where donated items of daily living are provided to needy children living in Kenmore-Tonawanda at no cost.

According to UNICEF, children in the United States are more likely to live in poverty than those in any other developed nation (http://www.unicef-irc.org/publications/pdf/rc7_eng.pdf). The American Psychological Association reports that children living in poverty are at greater risk for adverse academic outcomes, emotional problems such as depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. In addition, these children may be subjected to poor nutrition, chronic stress and live in unsafe neighborhoods (http://www.apa.org/pi/families/poverty.aspx). Many families are being asked to do more with fewer resources. The free and reduced price lunch (FRPL) program is a federal initiative that provides free or inexpensive lunches to children from low-income families. In the Ken-Ton U.F.S.D., 39% of children receive free or reduced lunch. To further complicate matters, the disparity between schools is wide. While 8 of the District’s 14 programs fall less than the District total, four schools have populations where more than half of the students receive free or reduced lunch (Franklin Elementary, Holmes Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary and the Sheridan School/Big Picture Program). Within the latter, Holmes Elementary has a staggering 85% of their students receiving free or reduced lunch. Throughout the year, Ken-Ton residents donate used clothing to organizations such as Goodwill and Salvation Army. Although these service organizations provide resources to those in need, much of what is collected does not remain in the Ken-Ton community, often times being moved to other towns or the City of Buffalo. Furthermore, despite the low cost of clothing, the expense may still be prohibitive to the families most in need. Lack of appropriate clothing is a very real non-educational barrier to learning and therefore an impediment to success for many of our students. The Ken-Ton Parent Alliance (KTPA) is a volunteer organization in the Ken-Ton community with the mission to inform and empower parents to advocate for the needs of their children. Since its inception in the spring of 2012, the group was recognized by the Board of Education and has grown to over 100 active members. The KTPA believes the answer to at least one problem plaguing children in need is to provide them with clothing and basic necessities free of charge. This can be achieved by creating a system by which donated resources are collected by KTPA/community volunteers and distributed to children by KTPA and other authorized personnel with cooperation from the Town of Tonawanda, Village of Kenmore, Ken-Ton U.F.S.D and other community entities. Children will now not have to worry about how to obtain basic clothing items; they can get help with dignity and discretion. The proposed host location is at the Sheridan Parkside Youth Center. Any child residing in Ken-Ton would be eligible to receive assistance; the child does not have to be enrolled in the public schools of Kenmore-Tonawanda U.F.S.D.

Mission: The primary mission of the Ken-Ton Closet is to directly improve the quality of life for needy children (ages 0 – 18 years) living in the Village of Kenmore/Town of Tonawanda by providing them with items of daily living such as clothing, school supplies, toiletries, and other materials at no cost.

Alright, brainiacs! We need your help! As you know, our 3rd Annual MEAT RAFFLE is being held on Saturday, March 7th at St. Andrews. We will be posting the link to register for a table or to volunteer some time in the next few weeks. In the meantime, we'd love to hear your suggestions for our ever-popular meat raffle shirt.

You may recall in the first year we had a Lionel Richie silhouette (Hello, is it Meat You're Looking For?) and in year two we had a pig (I Like Pig Butts and I Cannot Lie). Post your favorite Meat Raffle Shirt idea below in the comments or send it to us PM....if your idea is chosen, we will give you a free shirt for you and a friend with the winning design. Just a hint....we love music-themed shirts! If more than one of the same entry is submitted, the prize will go to the first person that submitted it to us (time and date stamp). We know the shirts from Nickel City Shirt Co. will be fabulous!! We can't wait to see what you send us! Please share.

Hey Friends! It’s time for another volunteer night. Thursday, January 23 from 6 to 8 is our first open volunteer night of the new year. We hope to be working on the donations from Plato‘s Closet and Clothes Mentor. We hope some of you will be able to join us!

Also we attached a pic of a list of things we desperately need. We accept donations at the Closet on Tuesdays and Thursdays 10 AM-4 PM and during our volunteer night. A list of our public collection sites can be found here: https://www.kentoncloset.org/collection-sites

And our family just keeps coming through! Last year, we had a student Emily from HMS come in with her parents to volunteer. I think we might even have a pic of them holding up some bathing suits 🤔😏

Fast forward to this month when her dad Floyd reached out to us to see if we would be interested in a stuffed animal/book donation from Kohl’s on Niagara Falls Blvd. I was so excited because I knew exactly what he was talking about… My own kids have a few of these and we especially loved the Grouchy Ladybug version (book and matching stuffed animal). We did not expect to have such a generous donation and we are SUPER thrilled to give these to our kiddos!! Thank you to Floyd for keeping us in mind and to Kohl’s for having a corporate policy that allows kids to have something they may not be able to afford. #winning ✌🏼❤️😃

Inspired by the Ken-Ton Closet and Kenmore West High School's "Freestyle" shop, Franklin Middle School now has a brand new place for students to shop for free fashionable clothing items called "Carley's Closet." This incredible addition to the school was made possible through the coordination of Mrs. Carley Panepinto and the donations from FMS faculty and staff!

Another Ken-Ton Closet project for our kiddos!! Thank you Ms. Ratka, Mr. Galante and Mr. Schwob for your help 😍

Ms. Thomas, Mr. Galante and Ms. Jaros, along with our counseling department have been consistently taking students outside during lunches for a recess period. Each day, weather permitting, a group of students are able to come outside and participate in a variety of activities.

A special thanks goes out to Mrs. O'Malley and the Ken-Ton Closet for helping us secure equipment! The students have loved it, and behavior in the cafeteria has improved tremendously!

An exciting day here at the Closet! Had a great meeting with our @Big Picture interns today about some projects they are working on for us. I was so impressed with the questions they asked and the organization of their project that I had to call their principal to let them know. Great job Kiera and Emily! Can’t wait to see what you do.

Our BFFs from Sheridan Parkside are back and have made our family complete. Miss Sheila is retired and volunteering. Dave has returned to the building after paternity leave. Now we’re just waiting for Chuck! ❤️

I mentioned in The fall that I had a chance to present about the Closet at our New York State School Boards Convention. The Editor was in the audience and the organization’s newspaper (OnBoard) ran a centerfold story about the Closet...even better, when I can into work today, my boss had it framed for me. 👍🏼❤️ Can’t wait to hang it in my office (yes, I will have an office and even more amazing is that it is another Eagle Scout project). So blessed to be here.

This will never get old. We love our Ken-Ton kids!

A special thanks to Spirit Coordinator Mary Russell, Franklin Elementary Principal Evans, Ken-Ton Superintendent Bovino, Ken-Ton Closet Assistant Director Cathy McLeod, Nickel City Shirt Co. and Ken-Ton Public Relations Director Patrick Fanelli for their help today!

Today was a very special day at Franklin Elementary School. Thanks to the Ken-Ton Closet and Nickel City Shirt Co. all students received a FREE school shirt just before today's all-school assembly which focused on respecting one another and what makes each of us different. The logo on the shirt incorporates both the spirit of the Bulldogs and the Benjamin Franklin lightning bolt, and it was created by Kenmore East High School student (and Franklin Elementary alum) Grace Eleey!

Happy 2020, Friends! We hope you had a blessed holiday with friends and family. We are very excited to start off the year with you 😍

First things first, we need about 30 copy paper boxes for clothing/supply storage. If you have any that you can drop off at the Closet during our normal hours, we would appreciate it. If you have several, we can arrange for pick up. Please and thanks!

We wanted to let you know about some changes to our registration procedure. Starting on January 1st, we will now be collecting child names so this information can be used to verify their school of attendance. You still need a photo ID to register and to shop at each visit (license, benefit card, etc) *AND* you will also need to provide proof of address the FIRST time you register for the year (this will need to be a current utility bill, lease agreement/mortgage statement, etc., in the primary adult's name). If you have any questions about this, please let us know by sending us a message here, email ([email protected]) or leave us a voicemail (218.9589) and we can call you back (sorry, we do not have a landline).

And last but not least, our internship program has been so successful we will be offering a summer internship for the first time ever! 🙌🏼 We will have more info in the spring after our meat raffle (which is March 7th, by the way!).

How lucky are we? Meet our fabulous interns from Kenmore West and the Big Picture Program: Dakota, Justin, Kiera, and Emily. These kiddos are so valuable to our program...they sort, clean, help bring in donations, (pretty much anything we ask them to do) and are working on some special projects they have designed. Thanks, guys! We love ya! 😘 #kidshelpingkids

Thank you Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Union Free School District for sharing these students with us and to Nickel City Shirt Co. for our special intern shirts! What an amazing way to round out 2019! ✌🏼❤️😃

Some amazing news from our very own Town of Tonawanda Police Department! ❤️

Tis the season! We'd like to tell you about some of the amazing work that Santa's elves have been doing around here!

With the assistance of TTPD Officer Joseph Kazmark, Northtown’s Academy students held a Holiday Food Drive recently. Over a three week period nearly 500 food items were collected and donated to a local community outreach program! The students were able to realize their efforts and connect with their community in a positive way by helping to load up the food on Friday for distribution. A special thanks to all those who helped make this event a success!

Det. Frank DiRienzo coordinated with the H.A.V.E. Project, which serves homeless veterans in the WNY community, and spearheaded a donation drive of toiletry items that will be distributed to the homeless veterans in our area. Lt. Franco and Chief Stauffiger met with Shawn McKinnon from the H.A.V.E. Project this morning when he came to pick up the donations that continue to overflow the bins. We will continue to keep a bin in our lobby for donations.

The TTPD would also like to thank our community and neighbors for the outpouring of donations to the Ken-Ton Closet, H.A.V.E. Program, and the Ken-Ton Toys for Kids bins that have been located in our lobby. It was such a heartwarming surprise to find them overflowing, again, after the weekend. You all make our community a better place!

The Toy Drive has ended and all the bins are being picked up today. The toys will be sorted over the next few days to get ready for distribution. We will continue to keep the Ken-Ton Closet and H.A.V.E. Project bins in our lobby so feel free to make a donation at any time.

Attention shoppers: If your child received a pair of Bombas socks from us and you would be willing to tell us how great they are (and maybe a pic of your kiddo wearing them), can you send us a DM or comment below? We would love to share your story with them! Between them and our kiddos at HMS, we are able to keep many feet nice and cozy! Please and thanks! ❤️🧦

AMAZING DELIVERY ALERT!!

Over the summer a former student of mine contacted me to say her son’s Cub Scout pack picked the Ken -Ton Closet for their community service donation project. Now almost 4 months later and we have a great story to share! A huge hug to Cub Scout Pack 619 from Williamsville....Mom Beth Hussey and her son Ryan delivered about 60 of these beautifully wrapped boxes filled with toiletries, socks, and underwear filled by each boy....plus 5 cases of diapers. Three carts full!! One of our volunteers said she cried (I won’t say who 😉). The Pack meets at Forest School in Williamsville and we are so grateful for their help! Just love this place so much!! Thank you to our Friends in Cub Scout Pack 619! 😘

You can’t make days like this up! Woke up in the morning to a fabulous front-page story about our Soctober donation from our kiddos at Hoover and we received our grant from the East Hill Foundation (more on that later)! Headed to the Closet to drop off some donations and ran into some other people that had the same idea. A shout out to Captain Murphy and Range Lieutenant Flatau from the Town of Tonawanda Police Department for dropping off a donation of BRAND NEW BEARS from Buffalo Biodiesel Inc. We know some kiddos that are going to be super excited for this! 😍

Rebecca from Clothe Me Co-Op saw our list of needed items and stopped by with *3 carts* of bags (sorted by size) to help us out. We know some Closet Volunteers that are going to be excited about this 😆.

We found out that an article about us is going to be published in the New York State School Boards Association paper and we are working on another major project with Nickel City Shirt Co.. Trust us when we say, you won’t want to miss this!

And before the morning was done, C.H.A.T. of WNY stopped by with some donations, too.

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR THIS FABULOUS THURSDAY! #lovethisplace #ittakesatown ✌🏼❤️😃

I stopped by this morning to drop off a donation and a kind lady gave me a tour! What an amazing place!! So clean and well organized. Great job folks!!!
Come out and share if you have items you can part with. This is 100% free to the community This Saturday 10am- Noon
Do you accept nonperishable food items? Or just clothes/shoes & toiletries?
I just have to thank you guys. We were SO blessed today to be able to come get some warm winter clothes ❤️❄️ thank you for being such an amazing resource for the community! The staff was SO extremely kind and helpful!
I've been working on winter hats. When will you be collecting cold weather goods?
I saw a post a while ago about collecting all size/season shoes. Where can I drop them off?? Need any clothes?
I'm collecting shoes and sneakers for the Ken-Ton closet. I had an Allstate agent from Maryland send us four brand new pair of sneakers. I'm proud to represent a company that is made up of people who really care. It's things like this that separate us from the rest. Thank you so much Randy McPhillips. To my friends in Maryland please call Randy for a quote. He truly is a class act. — at Allstate Insurance Agent: Randy McPhillips.
I shop on Amazon all the time and I almost forgot that the closet is a charity listed on it. It was so easy to add it to my home page so from now on all my purchases will count toward the closet.
I have 3 boxes of books and zoo magazines I would like to donate can I just bring them to the Ken-Ton Closet?
