Today, I recognize our Chemung County Sheriff Bill Schrom for his three decades of outstanding commitment, dedication and service to the Chemung County Sheriff's Office and the people of Chemung County. He has surrounded himself with many capable individuals who have the experience, credentials and sincere desire to serve and protect our residents. He could not do the tremendous job he is doing without them. From Undersheriff Doug Houper to the Deputies, Correction Officers, 911 Communication Operators and Staff, they all contribute immensely to the Office of Sheriff. Thank you to all the members of the Chemung County Sheriff's Office for all you do. You are greatly appreciated!

A STATEMENT FROM SHERIFF GARCIA
One of my deputies was recently exposed to fentanyl during a traffic stop. During the investigation, the deputy experienced a high level of discomfort. He was immediately administered two doses of Narcan by onsite EMS personnel and transported to a local hospital for follow-up treatment.
The news of the event and his treatment has ignited some controversy and prompted reactionary articles. However, I support EMS’s action of administering Narcan once the possibility of fentanyl exposure is learned. Inaction in this matter could have potentially led to the death of a public servant.
The Erie County Sheriff’s Office works closely with our community EMS providers to ensure a rapid and effective response to all medical emergencies. We trust that our medical partners’ decision to administer treatment is based on necessity and sound clinical judgment. We are all part of a larger team dedicated to reducing the effects of the op**te crisis on our community.
The Erie County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to providing a timely and effective response to op**te intoxication and overdose patients. We have also devoted significant resources to training deputies and correction officers to correctly identify and treat those patients exhibiting the signs of op**te overdose. My staff has been trained in using intranasal Narcan properly per NYS DOH op**te overdose prevention program requirements.
Law enforcement and first responders are at risk for accidental exposure to illicit drugs during routine operations. As stated by the CDC and NIOSH, specific preventive measures are recommended to decrease the chance of exposure. However, not all exposures can be prevented. Quick recognition and intervention may prevent more serious or life-threatening signs and symptoms in these cases.
The Erie County Sheriff’s Office and our community EMS partners will continue to train, adapt, and respond to the ever-present op**te crisis. It’s our goal to prevent unnecessary injury or death to anyone affected, regardless of the cause.
Sheriff Garcia and the ECSO are heartbroken at the news that two Rochester NY Police Department officers were attacked & 1 killed. Godspeed for a full recovery, and our unwavering support to the family of the fallen & to our law enforcement brothers & sisters in
