Senior Army Reserve medical leaders gathered at the General George Patton Museum of Leadership on Aug. 27 for a workshop designed to strengthen medical talent management and ensure the Army Reserve places the right people in the right positions.
The Army Reserve Medical Talent Management Workshop brought together general officers, colonels, consultants and senior leaders across Army Medicine to align personnel decisions with the Army’s evolving operational requirements. Officials described the event as the first of its kind to unite so many senior medical leaders in one setting.
Lt. Col. Christopher Maginn, assigned to the Office of the Chief of Army Reserve located at Fort Belvoir, Va., said the initiative represents a critical step toward building a sustainable program.�“The Talent Management Workshop is Army Medicine’s way of identifying our best medical personnel,” Maginn said. “We want to make sure we get the right people in the right places, that we retain these people, so we have long-term mission success.”
Maj. Gen. Beth Salisbury, commander of the Fort Douglas, Utah based 807th Theater Medical Command, said the workshop directly supports the Army’s ability to fight and win in future conflicts.�“For us, it’s about how we get after Large-scale Combat Operations and build combat formations that provide world-class medical capabilities for combatant commanders and Soldiers on the ground,” Salisbury said.
She also noted the Army Reserve is developing an artificial intelligence tool that will allow leaders to manage talent in real time. “It allows us to look at all of our talent and provide them with direction and guidance on where their careers should go,” Salisbury said.
Col. Melissa Wardlaw, chief of the Health Services Division at the Human Resources Command here at Fort Knox, Ky., said the workshop aligns with the Army’s broader transformation.�“This workshop really is to align talent, to make sure we have the right person in the right place at the right time,” Wardlaw said. “We’re going through a huge Army transformation, so we need to understand what skills we want as we make changes, ensuring we’re driving that change with the right experience and knowledge.”
Wardlaw added that the workshop emphasized leadership development as a people-centered process. “We talk about capabilities, but I think we need to add faces to those capabilities,” she said.
Leaders said they hope the workshop will become a recurring event and help establish a lasting framework for medical talent management within the Army Reserve.
