Good morning Torrington. The recent weather related maps and information is posted concerning the upcoming severe winter storm. Updates will continue as information changes. Torrington will be enacting a parking ban through Tuesday morning. Eversource, the Police and Fire Departments, Trinity Ambulance as well as our Public Works departments are all ready to deal with this storm. The snow from this storm is expected to be very heavy and not like the fluffy dry snow that we had during the storm in January. Citizens are encouraged to not exert yourselves when shoveling or clearing snow. This snow can be considered "heart attack" snow due to the weight and needed exertion to shovel. In an emergency situation call 9-1-1 and emergency services will respond as quickly as possible. Stay tuned to your local news stations and internet links for updates.

Good evening all,
See the latest update on our extreme cold weather outbreak. I've also attached a YouTube link that gives the forecast as well as some cold weather tips concerning this unusual cold snap. The Torrington/Northwest Connecticut area obtains its weather reports from Albany, New York, while the rest of the state obtains is weather report from the Boston office of the National Weather Service. None the less we can all agree that it's pretty cold. Fortunately, the weather will moderate into next week where temperatures should be back to normal. I will update you as needed.

A clipper system will track into Connecticut Friday night into Saturday, bringing snowfall to the region. Light snow is expected to develop after 9 PM on Friday, which may create some slick spots late Friday night into early Saturday. A general 1 to 3 inches of snow is likely across the entire forecast area. Snow will end from west to east on Saturday morning, but snow showers may linger in Central and Eastern CT where an inverted trough signature has been showing up on models. This is a smaller scale feature that could lead to locally heavier snow banding in this region as well.

This system also marks the leading edge of a much colder air mass that will impact the region this weekend. Winds will pick up during the day on Saturday, gusting 35 to 45 mph by Saturday afternoon and evening. This will create wind chills of -10 to -30 degrees. AN EXTREME COLD WATCH has been issued for the entire region from Saturday Evening through Sunday Afternoon.

No major changes to the thinking on the storm evolution as the storm impacts our area based on. the data being received. There remains high confidence for heavy snow throughout the forecast region. The only remaining variable to resolve is exactly how far north sleet makes it Sunday night. This will not make a significant difference in impacts, but an earlier transition would put totals at the lower end of the range. An all-snow solution would increase totals to the higher end of the range, especially in Southern zones. BB

The latest update to the winter storm is shown in the attached graphics. Not much has changed and the confidence remains that this will be a significant snow event. Power outages are not expected, but residents should be prepared non the less. Be sure you have plenty of fuel and do not run any small engines/generators indoors that can cause deadly carbon monoxide. Winter storm updates will be provided as needed.

Good afternoon, all. Attached are the latest weather maps for the upcoming snowstorm that is expected to impact our area Sunday and Monday. As with all storm systems, changes in forecasts are common and what is predicted can actually be much less of an impact or more than predicted. In this upcoming storm that will impact our area, all the weather models are in agreement that this will be a significant winter storm--the largest storm our area has experienced since February 9, 2013. Although as of this briefing, a travel ban has not been issued, it is requested that all citizens stay off the roads for your safety. Traveling during this storm will be difficult. This will be a snow event and power outages for our area although possible, are not expected. Eversource is in an enhanced operating condition and will be monitoring our area for any potential power outage impacts and will respond accordingly. During this storm, please check on your elderly neighbors to ensure that their needs are being met. Updates to this storm will be provided as needed. ~ Bill Baldwin-EMD
