The corner of South Street and East Street in Litchfield, Connecticut, around the 1860s-70s and 2023. The building in the center of the old photo was the United States Hotel, which was built in 1787. Later known as the Phelps Tavern, the building was expanded in the early 1900s but was ultimately demolished in 1939.

Today, the site where the hotel stood is vacant, but the other historic buildings from the old photo are still standing, including the small store on the left side, which was built in 1781 as an apothecary shop and was moved to this site in 1812. On the far left is the John Collins House (1782), and on the far right side is the General Timothy Skinner House (1761).

Proposed bill would limit self-checkout stations and require more staff at grocery stores.

With a limited schedule for a short period of legislative session is this a priority.

With concerns over food insecurity, healthcare insurance costs rising, education reimbursement declining, rise in energy costs now fuel inflation rising out of control. With so many huge economic problems looming and the system is beginning to struggle and implosion is becoming increasingly possible.

A proposed bill would place new requirements on grocery stores that offer self-checkout lanes.

Blizzard Calvin (WFSB), Winter Storm Hernando (Weather Channel).
The Nor' Easter has gone through Bombogenesis. This is a meteorological term for a storm that intensifies extremely rapidly.
When bombogenesis happens, storms can become:
* Much stronger very quickly
* Capable of heavy snow or rain
* Accompanied by powerful winds
* Potentially blizzard-like along the coast
Because of the rapid deepening, media sometimes call these storms:
* “Bomb cyclone”
* “Winter cyclone”
* “Weather bomb”

🌨️WINTER STORM UPDATE 🌨️

Troop B wants to ensure all residents are prepared for a significant Winter Storm impacting our state starting Sunday afternoon and continuing through Monday evening.

According to the latest briefing from the CT Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, this “Nor’easter" will bring severe winter conditions across the state. Winter Storm Watches have been issued for Northern CT, while Southern CT is under Winter Storm Warnings and Blizzard Warnings along the coast.

What to Expect:

❄️ Snowfall: 10”-16” expected in Northern CT, and 16”-22” in Southern CT.

🌬️ Winds: Very strong wind gusts ranging from 35 to 70 MPH, which may cause whiteout conditions.

💧 Snow Consistency: The snow is expected to be wet and heavy. This will make it much harder to plow and increases the risk of minor to moderate power outages due to the combined weight of the snow and strong winds.

Travel Impacts:

The impact on travel is expected to be MAJOR. We strongly urge all residents to STAY OFF THE ROADS starting Sunday afternoon. Staying home not only keeps you safe, but it also allows the Connecticut Department of Transportation plow crews to clear the roads and helps keep first respond to safe and available for emergencies.

Winter Weather Safety Tips:

• 🏠 Stay Home: Avoid all non-essential travel. If you do not need to be out, please stay home!

• 🔋 Prepare for Power Outages: Charge your cell phones, check your flashlight batteries, and have emergency supplies ready before Sunday afternoon.

• ⚠️ Roof Safety: With heavy snow expected, be mindful of snow loading on roofs. While the risk is low, snowfall totals exceeding 24" can put a strain on carports or dilapidated structures.

• 🚗 Emergency Travel Only: If you absolutely must travel for an emergency, clear your vehicle completely of snow and ice. Keep an emergency kit (blankets, water, snacks, flashlight) in your car. If you get stuck, ensure your exhaust pipe is clear of snow to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

We will be out there braving the elements, but we need your help to keep Connecticut safe.

Please continue to monitor local weather stations for the most up-to-date tracking as this storm approaches.

In an emergency, always dial 911. Stay safe and stay warm!
