Whether you're new to birding or a seasoned pro, we would love to have you and join together to raise awareness for migratory bird conservation.

In 2018, the non-profit, Environment for the Americas (EFTA), joined with two other bird conservation groups to create a campaign called “World Migratory Bird Day” (WMBD). The EFTA works to connect people to “bird conservation through education and research.”

WMBD highlights three major migratory bird corridors: the African-Eurasian, the East Asian-Australasian, and the Americas flyway. All over the world, on May 9th, events and programs are held in these respective regions to raise awareness for the conservation of migratory birds and the protection of their habitats.

In our own region, migratory birds, like yellow-rumped warblers, Swainson’s thrushes, ruby-crowned kinglets, and painted buntings spend this time moving through the area, either returning from their wintering habitat or for a pit-stop on their journey further north to rest and eat.

To help celebrate WMBD, our outreach team is hosting a “World Migratory Bird Day Count” on May 8th, a day early, at three different locations. Pick one you’d like to attend, sign up at the link, and join Travis County staff to explore one of the following birding sites: the Vireo Ridge area on the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve (BCP), the Kotrla tract, or Reimer’s Ranch. Whether you're new to birding or a seasoned pro, we would love to have you and join together to raise awareness for migratory bird conservation.

Every year, volunteers at the Spring Cleanup remove confetti, wrappers, cigarette butts, bottle caps, and tiny plastics from parks and waterways east of Austin. These items may seem small, but they cause big problems for wildlife and water quality.

📍 Cleanup sites: East Austin, Del Valle, Manor, Pflugerville, Webberville

Join Us in Shaping the Future of Our Parks!🌳

We are excited to announce the launch of the Travis County Comprehensive Parks Plan.

Our goal is to create a parks plan that truly reflects the needs and desires of our diverse community. To achieve this, we need your 🫵 input!

Through surveys, participatory mapping, and public workshops, you will have the opportunity to provide detailed feedback on the appearance, amenities, and priorities of our parks. The new comprehensive plan will be adopted by Travis County Commissioners Court in early 2026.

Visit https://outdoorengage.mysocialpinpoint.com/travis to find out more about how you can participate and upcoming events. We look forward to hearing your ideas and working together to shape the future of our parks.

Later this month, Jan 29 and 30 we will have our first community meeting, virtually, to learn about the Travis County Comprehensive Parks Plan and hear your ideas.
