That’s right! Everyone knows us for our alligators and manatees, but bison are an important part of our ecological heritage, too.

While there aren’t any free-roaming bison herds left in our state, you might be able to catch a glimpse of this American icon at Payne’s Prairie Preserve State Park.

Payne’s Prairie is located near Gainesville, making it a fun + easy day trip from anywhere in Gilchrist county!
