How Can We Improve Teacher Retention in Troy?

Our teachers are the lifeblood of our schools. If we want to retain great educators, we must provide meaningful opportunities for them to be heard—and then act on what we learn.

After COVID, healthcare experienced a serious loss of nurses. As a nurse manager, I dealt directly with this challenge. We used staff surveys, individual conversations and exit interviews to identify why nurses were leaving. We analyzed the results, looked for recurring concerns and developed solutions based on what employees told us.

I believe Troy should consider a similar approach for teacher retention:

✅ Confidential, third-party surveys about workplace culture, professional-development needs and administrative support
✅ Scheduled listening meetings with teachers throughout the year
✅ Consistent exit interviews when teachers leave
✅ Annual analysis of the results to identify trends and recommend measurable improvements
✅ Follow-up reports showing teachers what was learned and what actions were taken

This should not be about assigning blame. It should be about opening an honest discussion, rebuilding trust and finding solutions together.

I want to hear directly from Troy’s teachers: What would help you feel better supported, respected and encouraged to remain in our schools?

Thank you to the Troy Telugu Association for the special invitation to celebrate its 20th anniversary! The Troy Telugu Association (TTA) is a nonprofit cultural and community organization serving Telugu-speaking families in Troy

I was incredibly proud to see my husband, Mark, who is very active in our community, honored for his service. It was also a privilege to be invited onstage and introduced as a candidate for the Troy School Board.

I’m grateful for the warm welcome, the beautiful celebration, and the opportunity to spend time with so many wonderful members of our community. Congratulations to the Troy Telugu Association on 20 years of preserving culture, strengthening families, and bringing people together!
