It’s Mother’s Day weekend and we have a gift for you! Thanks to Dr. Leah Panther at Mercer University, her research assistants, and others at Georgia Southern, copies of Tucker High School Yearbooks from 1967 to 1979 are now online.

Ever heard the song "Cofer Country"? Way back in 1994, in commemoration of Cofer Brothers 75th anniversary, Banks and Shane recorded Cofer Country. A catchy one minute jingle.

A large tree has fallen at Old Fellowship Cemetery crossing several graves, including the graves of four Revolutionary War veterans. Graner Whitley, Peter Cash (1795 - 1832), Edward Lovell (1756 - 1832), and Daniel Fones.

Long before The Corner Cup Coffee opened at 2380 Main Street, the space was home to Murphy’s Barber Shop. Neal Murphy opened on Main Street in 1965 and retired 48 years later.

Not long after Ed Tingley opened a new shop, Tucker Main St. Barber Shop, in the same location. Today Ed and Tony can be found at Charles' Barber & Style Shop on Cowan Road in the Tucker Plaza shopping center behind Staples.

Neal was known not only for great haircuts and a good sense of humor, but for his large soda bottle collection. Mostly Coca-Cola bottles.

This year marks DeKalb County’s 200th anniversary (1822 – 2022). To commemorate the bicentennial, the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce created a book celebrating DeKalb’s history. The book is online in a flipbook format and can be downloaded in PDF.

Last night the City of Tucker - Government approved a contract with Brandied History to develop a preservation plan and construction documents for a period appropriate restoration of the historic buildings on the Johns Homestead property on Lawrenceville Hwy.

As Frank Auman, Mayor Tucker, Georgia pointed out in his comments at the meeting, this is a community driven effort. One that began over a decade ago with the Tucker Historical Society bringing attention to the property.

Our partners the Friends of Johns Homestead have carried the banner forward with a significant push in recent years, largely for the wider park property, but always with protection of the actual homestead in mind. Thank you to all who have contributed their time, energy, and resources into protecting a unique time capsule view of what DeKalb County looked like in the 1800s. This includes Commissioner Steve Bradshaw, Tucker Parks & Recreation, Tucker Civic Association, and many others.

Sometimes we forget to promote ourselves, so big thanks to the City of Tucker - Government for making the Tucker Historical Society citizen of the month for September.

Each of you reading this are part of Tucker’s history. You help build the legacy of our community every day.

People don’t have good memories of Tucker because the grass is greener or the sky is bluer. (Although we think it is) They have good memories because of how they were treated. More importantly, how they chose to treat others.

We will continue to collect, preserve, and share Tucker’s history far into the future. In return we ask that you always do your part in the timeline of Tucker to carry on the goodness in all you do.

This month we'd like to feature the Tucker Historical Society as our Citizen of the Month. It is through their hard work at preservation and their long familial history that the story of Tucker will be remembered.
