Thank you Friends of Pima Animal Care Center for spreading the word! Our cooling center is very pet friendly.

🌡️Extreme heat affects everyone in our community—including pets.

The TucsonSentinel recently shared a story highlighting the important role cooling centers play in helping our neighbors stay safe during Tucson's extreme summer heat.

Friends of PACC is proud to support these community efforts by providing pet food and pet supplies to the Tucson Ward 3 City Council Office of Kevin Dahl Cooling Center, helping ensure that people can care for the pets they love while accessing these vital resources.

Big shout-out and thank you to Angela Murphy, who runs the cooling center for St. St Francis Shelter in our community room during the summer.

“We’re a community here,” Angela Murphy said.

Murphy said her own experiences of having lived on the street and being in recovery from addiction help build trust, which she sees as essential to access, especially when working with people who are regularly policed.

“I can’t do this without people trusting me, trusting that I’m doing this for the right reasons,” she said. “That’s why I think it’s so important to have programs like this be peer-led.”

Extreme heat is one of Tucson’s most significant public health threats, and homeless people are among those most at risk. Last year, unhoused people accounted for nearly one in four heat-related deaths in Pima County, despite only about one in every 500 residents being homeless.
