At our last meeting the Pima County Board of Supervisors celebrated a special milestone for our community: Children's Museum Tucson’s 40th anniversary!

For four decades, Children's Museum Tucson has helped kids learn, explore, create, and discover. I was proud to see this incredible institution receive the recognition it deserves. I’m especially proud that Children’s Museum Tucson is located right here in Pima County District 2.

Congratulations to the founders, staff, educators, volunteers, donors, board members, and community partners who have helped make 40 years of learning and discovery possible.

Here’s to many more milestones and years of play and learning to come!

My team and I recently had an opportunity to see firsthand the work happening across Tucson to connect residents experiencing or at risk of homelessness with shelter, housing resources, supportive services, and pathways toward greater stability.

As the guests of Tucson Vice Mayor Lane Santa Cruz we visited Casa del Pueblo, the Wildcat Inn, and STAR Village, with Housing First Director Brandi Champion as our guide.

I particularly appreciated hearing directly from staff about the people they serve, the role each site plays in the community, and the needs they’re seeing on the ground.

Thank you to Vice Mayor Santa Cruz, Brandi and her team, and to the staff and partners who welcomed us and shared their important work.

Roberto Navarro Bocanegra was brought to the U.S. as an 18-month-old child. He was a bone marrow donor for his younger sister during her three-year battle with leukemia, earned a full scholarship to the University of Arizona, and followed the law by beginning the process of adjusting his immigration status through his U.S. citizen wife.

Instead of being allowed to complete that process, he was placed into deportation proceedings.

Now, every morning when Roberto leaves for work, his wife urges him to come home safely. And he can’t promise that he will.

This administration is tearing families apart in the name of “cracking down on immigration.” These actions are unconscionable, and in many cases, unlawful.

The Trump administration is not going to deport 15 million people. And even if they somehow could, the economic consequences would be devastating. Enforcement should prioritize dangerous criminals, not law-abiding people who have built their lives, families, and futures in our communities.

Thrilled that my team and I got to tour the future home of the Pima County Main Library in the former Wells Fargo building, in the heart of downtown Tucson. It’s exciting to see the space that will be transformed into a place where kids discover a love of reading, students and job seekers find the resources they need to succeed, and our community comes together to learn, connect, and thrive. Libraries are one of our greatest public investments and this new Main Library will be a tremendous asset for Pima County.

Congratulations to Jorge Soto on being sworn in as Pima County’s new Treasurer. I’m confident Jorge will provide the office steady leadership and serve the people of Pima County well. Wishing Treasurer Soto success in his new role.

Great news: Pima County’s Main Library now has a resource vending machine stocked with Narcan, fentanyl test strips, trigger locks, heat safety bags, women’s hygiene products, and other helpful essentials. And best of all: it’s free. As a physician, I know these simple resources help save lives. As a member of the Pima County Board of Supervisors, I’m proud we’re making them easier to access. Stop by, spread the word, and take what you need.

Pima County’s Native Plant Nursery helps keep our community’s rich desert habitat healthy, beautiful and thriving. And now thanks to a new greenhouse funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the nursery will have additional space to grow even more native plants, including the Pima pineapple cactus, federally protected under the Endangered Species Act. These plants enrich public spaces across Pima County’s diverse ecosystem, helping restore habitat, conserve water, and preserve the unique beauty of the Sonoran Desert. Thank you to my fellow Pima County Supervisors for voting to continue funding Adult Basic Education services at the Pima County Jail, and for launching a broader conversation about how we can expand educational and workforce opportunities for people as they leave the jail and return to our community.

Nearly everyone who enters the jail will return home within weeks or months. The question is whether they return with greater opportunities and stronger pathways to success.

This important program provides access people with to education, GED preparation, and workforce skills while they’re incarcerated. This creates opportunity, reduces recidivism, and strengthens our entire community.

I especially want to thank Supervisor Scott for sharing his own experience of earning a GED as a young man and getting back on track. His story challenged us to think bigger about what’s possible.

We can ensure more people in the jail have access to educational opportunities and begin the path toward earning a GED. And we can go even further, partnering with Pima Community College and building on the successful work already underway across multiple County departments to create stronger, more seamless pathways from incarceration to education, employment, and sustained success.

Education changes lives. Expanding opportunities for people to earn their GED and continue their education after release will benefit not only those individuals and their families, but our entire community.
