BREAKING🚨 Newly released Baltimore police body camera video shows an officer telling terrified school staff that ICE isn't allowed on school property, then adding that in this political era "they do what they want and there's no repercussions."
The footage was recorded June 11 outside Commodore John Rodgers Elementary/Middle School in East Baltimore, where ICE agents pinned Jesus Acevedo Sanchez face down in the driveway leading to the school bus loop while his daughter leaned out of a car window, crying. A speech therapist at the school called police. She told the officers she watched agents drag him out of the vehicle and abuse him.
Officer Parris Harley got there first and told her Baltimore police don't usually get involved in ICE incidents. "Our policies and the guidelines and laws we abide by, it seems like they operate totally different," he said. His supervisor, Lieutenant Dixon, arrived minutes later and said ICE is "not supposed to be on school property, hospitals or courtrooms." Dixon told her she could have school police reach out to ICE supervisors, "but it's not going to do any good, to be honest with you."
Acevedo Sanchez and his partner, Adriana Gavilan Sanchez, were dropping off their daughter. Their attorneys say the couple left a Dunkin' Donuts just after 7 a.m. with their kids in the SUV, noticed a car following them, and were cut off near Dundalk Avenue. Men in all black got out with guns drawn and one broke the driver's side window. He drove to the school because he knew officers would be there.
ICE says he "refused lawful commands, violently resisted arrest" and dragged an officer with his vehicle. DHS also initially claimed Gavilan Sanchez punched officers. An affidavit later said there was "minimal physical resistance."
Both parents spent more than a month in immigration detention.
Federal Judge Julie Rubin called the case a "stomach churner," found ICE had NO PROBABLE CAUSE, and said the agents initially "did not wear any item that identified themselves."
