Do you know your cones?
In New York State, you can find several native and non-native tree species that grow cones (AKA “conifers”) and we’ve included an example of just a selection of some of them here.

But there are a lot of mis-cone-ceptions about conifers! Check out the facts below and file them away to impress your pals on your next woods walk:
🌲 Not all cones are pinecones. Pinecones only come from pine trees, but there are also spruces, firs, hemlocks, and other trees that grow cones.
🌲 And not all conifers are evergreens. In New York, we have the tamarack—a tree with cones that drops all its needles each year.
🌲 Some cones, like those of the jack pine, are "serotinus." This means they have a resin coating and require wildfire to release their seeds.
🌲 A cone holds seeds, but it is not a fruit. Conifers are gymnosperms, a group of seed-producing plants that don’t make fruit. The word gymnosperm comes from Greek roots and means “naked seed.”

Spotted lanternfly lay egg masses on trees and other smooth outdoor surfaces such as outdoor furniture, campers, and grills. The egg masses are white when fresh and dry to a mud-like consistency. To prevent large quantities of spotted lanternfly hatching in the spring, it is vital to check for egg masses and destroy them. If you find an egg mass, use a stiff card (similar to a credit card) or a putty knife to scrape the egg mass into a Ziploc bag or other disposable container. To ensure the eggs are destroyed, add rubbing alcohol or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Then, seal the bag or container and discard it.

Remember to leave your plants up for winter which provides a lotta ecosystem services such as: habitat, food, living snow fence, reduced urban flooding on frozen soils (dead stems hold on to moisture), soil stabilization, and something that looks kickass with snow on it.

{Also, this landscape is not rough or messy or weedy or let go. The name of every plant is known -- Latin and common -- and each is placed there on purpose based on research of that plant species. The space is actively managed.)
