An Evening with Dr. Ross Peterson

He earned his PhD in American Studies from Washington State University and taught American history at Utah State University for 35 years, where he also founded the Mountain West Center. Dr. Peterson is the author of numerous publications, including a history of Idaho written for the Bicentennial. His many honors include Utah’s Governor’s Award for Outstanding Humanist, and he previously served as the Wayne Aspinell Chair in Western History at Colorado Mesa University.

Announcement: Dr. Dounia Matthews to Speak on Native American Resilience and Broken Treaties in Idaho

Join us for an insightful and powerful discussion with Dr. Dounia Matthews, an anthropologist, educator, and ISU graduate, as she explores the history and ongoing impact of Native American removal, broken treaties, and the resilience of Indigenous communities in Idaho.

📅 Date: Thursday, February 13th
⏰ Time: 6:00 PM - 8 PM
📍 Location: Mountain View Barn, Jerome, Idaho
CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER!

Dr. Matthews will examine how federal policies shaped the displacement of Idaho’s Indigenous tribes—including the Nez Perce, Shoshone-Bannock, Coeur d'Alene, and Kootenai peoples—and how these communities have persevered through legal battles, cultural revitalization, and environmental stewardship. The talk will also address contemporary challenges, including the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and People (MMIW/P) crisis and tribal efforts to reclaim sovereignty.

This event is free and open to the public. Whether you are a student, educator, community member, or interested in Indigenous history and rights, we invite you to attend this meaningful conversation.

Don’t miss this opportunity to deepen your understanding of Idaho’s Indigenous history and the ongoing fight for justice and cultural preservation! Current issues facing Native Americans in Idaho
