Was exciting to be a part of the spectacular City of Santa Clara 2024 Earth Day/Arbor Day Celebration that was hosted by Environmental Programs!

The entire program was geared towards all students from our local schools between the ages of 6 - 10 that included activities, exhibitor booths, interactive music performances by the Banana Slugs and a Tree City USA award ceremony.

Lastly there was the ceremonial tree planting in Central Park.

Thank you to all the City of Santa Clara employees for making this happen. Big kudos to the Parks and Rec’s department.

Today the Q***r Silicon Valley traveling exhibit came to the City of Santa Clara and is located in the Santa Clara Central Park Library. This showcase of LGBTQ+ history is a perfect addition to our library which provides an education on the struggles and achievements of the LGBTQ+ community. 50 years of Q***r resistance and resilience in Silicon Valley. Former Santa Clara County Supervisor Ken Yeager was there today for the initial setup. I am proud to have this in our wonderful city and the exhibit will be there till the end of 2022. Check it out while you can.

Also if you missed it check out the documentary that premiered earlier this year and is now on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-z_le31Qbs

At the Aug. 16 City Council meeting, our Santa Clara City Council proclaimed the month of August American Muslim Awareness and Appreciation Month, honoring the incredible work of our Muslim community organizations and mosques in providing food, support, and resources to the community throughout the pandemic.

American Muslim Appreciation and Awareness Month recognizes the lasting positive impact that American Muslims have made toward the advancement of our state and country ... The City of Santa Clara’s mosques and community organizations have increased efforts to assist people during the pandemic by donating funds, distributing food, or providing other resources to help those struggling; and the Support Life Foundation in partnership Second Harvest Food Bank and Muslim Community Association distributed nearly 3 million pounds of food since the start of the pandemic to at-risk communities in Santa Clara County; and in addition to providing a base for Support Life’s food distribution, the Muslim Community Association (MCA) provides rental and other financial assistance in the millions of dollars yearly that were given by congregation members ... The City of Santa Clara is enriched by the diversity of its residents, and takes great pride in recognizing August as American Muslim Appreciation and Awareness Month in honor of the rich history, cultural traditions, and significant contributions that Muslim Americans have brought to the Santa Clara community.

17/08/2022

A couple weeks ago I reached out to our Mayor and asked if we could proclaim the month of August as Transgender History Month in the city of Santa Clara. After San Francisco's celebrated its 1st annual Transgender History Month ceremony, I felt with our city being in the center of Silicon Valley it would be an honor to recognize the rich history of our trans elders and trailblazers.

The City of Santa Clara joins the efforts to support, acknowledge and advocate for the Transgender community. The City of Santa Clara continues to promote the rights and support the ongoing efforts of LGBTQIA+ and transgender people to eliminate discrimination and violence faced by all individuals; and shed more visibility on transgender advocacy from the past, present, and future ... The City of Santa Clara affirms our commitment to stand with transgender individuals who continue to face discrimination, harassment, and barriers to opportunity, and ... honor transgender individuals and leaders who are continuing the fight for human rights for freedom, equality, dignity, and respect.

Transgender History Month honors the 56th anniversary of the Compton's Cafeteria Riots, which occurred in August 1966 in San Francisco's Tenderloin district, marking the beginning of transgender activism in San Francisco. A response to violent and constant police harassment, this incident was one of the first LGBTQ uprisings in United States history, preceding the better-known 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City.

In the City of San Francisco, The Tenderloin is now home to The Transgender District, created in 2018 as Compton's Transgender Cultural District, the nation's first legally recognized district dedicated to the transgender, nonbinary, and intersex community.

Sera Fernando, is a manager from the Santa Clara County Office of LGBTQ Affairs and is a trailblazer in our community for LGBTQ+ empowerment. She joined us on Zoom to accept the proclamation.

I stand with our trans community in making a safer future for all.

Sunday was a busy day out and about in Santa Clara.
First I joined Councilmember Chahal at Wilson High Field for the Silicon Valley Cricket festival. This was incredible and a massive amount of people attended. Councilmember Chahal explained to me the rules of Cricket. How good would it be if Santa Clara had its own Cricket Stadium! It would be a popular place!
After the cricket match, we headed to the Triton Museum for the Surviving COVID exhibit. Excellent artwork defining the effects of the pandemic on our society.
Following the exhibit, we went to Saint Anthony Festa at the SES Hall and visited with Mary Grizzle, Frank & Ruth Lemmon, & Raymond Da Gamma.

Truly a fun day in the community!
