PARENTS PLEASE READ‼️
Week 1 of our Grief & Loss Program “UNSPOKEN” was deeper than I expected. 🖤
We started with getting to know our youth and breaking down what grief really is. Grief is not just death. Grief can be losing a relationship, losing a parent who is still alive, foster care, divorce, incarceration, friendships ending, unmet expectations, or grieving the family you wish you had.
And whew… the youth taught ME some things this week. 👀
1. Some youth genuinely feel like they are a burden to their parents.
2. They admitted they sometimes put expectations on their parents that they already know may not be realistic.
3. When a youth loses a parent, STOP stealing their moment by immediately saying, “Well, I didn’t grow up with my dad either.” Their pain does not need competition. Let them grieve THEIR loss.
4. We are passing down generational trauma and calling it “how I was raised.”
5. This generation has been taught that having feelings makes you weak. And that is dangerous.
This week’s homework: 🌳
Go down your family tree. Learn how your parents were raised. If you can, learn how your grandparents were raised too. Ask questions. Pay attention to the patterns. Some of the things happening in your family did not start with you.
Now, parents… this part is for us. 👇🏾
We are busy. I get it.
We have bills.
We have stress.
We have responsibilities our children may not understand.
BUT PLEASE schedule weekly check-ins with your children. 📅❤️
If you have to literally put them on the calendar, DO IT.
And when it is their time—SHUT UP AND LET THEM HAVE THEIR MOMENT.
Don’t turn their pain into your story.
Don’t minimize it because you “had it worse.”
Don’t tell them they have nothing to be stressed about because they’re young.
And we have GOT to stop saying, “Well, that’s how I was raised.”
Okay… and how did that make you feel?
What did it teach you?
What did you have to unlearn because of it?
Our trauma may explain us, but it does not give us permission to bleed all over our children. 🩸➡️❤️🩹
We are responsible for healing enough that our children do not have to recover from us.
Week 1. And the youth are already talking.
The question is… are we really listening? 👂🏾🖤
