We had a lovely space to mix and mingle with shoppers this morning. Kudos to all our volunteers for all their help. Zion Project Grow gardeners are fast at work too, in the background. Photos feature out nifty volunteers, with PG board members, site coordinators, Dahlia Diva flower growers, and a Polish connected cousin from Lansing who stopped by to shop. ☺️😎🌱

Sign up for the Growing Peppers and Tomatoes class! It's offered online by a science-based, long-time Project Grow gardener. Royer Held shares knowledge on gardening. He'll cover fighting off common diseases and controlling pests, helped greatly by growing strong, healthy plants in the first place. He will discuss everything from starting seedlings to saving seeds.

It's our last class of the season!

If you are wondering about frost-freeze conditions for planting, Michigan Storm Chasers is a good page to follow along with watching the Weather Underground 10-day forecast. In the comments is a sample page from Joanie Stovall's Tips and Tricks for Starting Your Garden course listing cold crops that can be started now, regardless of cold soil temperatures.

Speaking of soil temperatures, a good number of veggies and flowers need WARM soil temps (not air temps) to thrive. A soil temperature chart link is in the comments from the Farmers' Almanac to help you judge when it is the right time to plant. A soil thermometer helps too.

Summary: Most vegetable seeds require a minimum soil temperature of 36° to 60°F to germinate. Below that, seeds may sit, rot, or sprout very slowly.

36° to 45°F (2° to 7°C): spinach, lettuce, peas
45° to 55°F (7° to 13°C): beets, carrots, cabbage
55° to 65°F (13° to 18°C): beans, corn, squash
65° to 75°F (18° to 24°C): tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, melons

Our highly scientific maps have returned... Today's edition... "Can I plant my garden yet?" Color coded to yes and no answers. Enjoy!

(PS: Cold weather crops are fine to plant! This should be self explanatory).
