How much time can we afford to give?
There are a ton of people basically screaming at you to tell you what you should care about, and how you should be spending a ton of time of this, that and the other thing.
Who are all these experts and what the heck do they even know?
“If you aren’t spending 10 minutes a week with every employee, you’re a bad manager”
“If you aren’t reading at least 1 hour a day, you’re a bad leader”
“If you aren’t spending…” on and on… And, don’t forget family time and self-care...those are a MUST!
If you did them all, you are right back to not having enough time! We are in a deluge of people, consultants, gurus, organizational geniuses that nobody ever heard of until last week… and the like trying to tell you what is important for you. They don’t know you, they don’t know your unique situation and they don’t know what you mandates are. That is why you will find yourself feeling very inadequate and overwhelmed.
So, here I am writing advice to tell you to stop listening to advice. At least, don’t look for advice until you have your priorities settled.
Nobody can tell you what your priorities should be for your organization. That is what you are there for. Clearly, we have legislative mandates and enterprise wide strategic plans that we must adhere to, but after that, there is plenty of open road for you to choose.
So, turn off the audiobook for a second and really think about what YOU want your organization to look like…then go looking for your spirit animal to guide you.
