When Judge Kobayashi organized a rice drive at the federal courthouse, she put out a challenge. Dentons, one of Hawaiʻi’s largest law firms, accepted and held one of their own.

Yesterday, Anderson and James from delivered almost 3,000 pounds of rice to our kitchen. This is a huge relief since rice is a staple of many of the 900 meals we serve daily, and it’s always the first thing we run low on.

If you or your company want to host a rice drive for IHS, send us a DM and we’ll walk you through the process. 🍚

Mahalo to and for making Mother’s Day special at our Kaaahi Women’s and Family Shelter.

Every mom received a bag filled with toiletries and feminine care essentials. Our team even set up a photo backdrop so families could celebrate and take pictures together.

Every mom deserves a day like this, no matter her situation. And we are grateful for partners who make sure it happens.

Most shelters just offer a bed. Kumu Ola Hou offers community, compassion, and recovery.

Our residents here are individuals who are healing from the traumas of homelessness and cognitive challenges that changed how they think and move. So twice a week, they do exercises like these.

It may look simple. But the neuroscience behind this is deep. And thanks to our partners at .official the results have been remarkable to see with many of our guests making miraculously rapid recoveries.

Rice is the foundation of most of the meals we make. That’s roughly 800 a day, seven days a week. So when our pantry runs low, it affects every plate and every guest we serve.

We owe Judge Kobayashi and the U.S. District Courts – District of Hawaiʻi a massive mahalo for organizing the “Got Rice?” drive and delivering over 600 pounds to our kitchen.

Meet James. He came to our ʻImi Ola Piha Triage and Treatment Center last month, carrying grief for the parents he lost and a determination to change his life. Three times during his eight days with us, he almost walked out against medical advice. Three times, he stayed.

From there, he transferred directly into residential treatment at Hina Mauka, where he is still showing up for himself. His sister is preparing a room for him in a bigger house, ready to welcome him home when he’s ready.

James, all of us at IHS are so proud of what you’ve accomplished and wish you the best going forward 💙

Our Executive Director Connie Mitchell and architect Ma Ry Kim, co-founder of B+HARI who developed the Compassionate Housing design framework, presented our business plan to scale this model at the 2026 Hogan Entrepreneurial Leadership Program, a nonprofit business plan competition hosted by and .

We are honored to have earned third place and can’t wait to bring Compassionate Housing™ to more communities across Hawaii!

April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month. But at IHS, volunteerism isn’t just a program. It’s our origin story and a year-round practice.

In every interaction, change flows both ways: our guests are supported and reminded they belong, while our volunteers leave with full hearts and an understanding of why this matters.

That’s been true for us since 1978, and 48 years later, it still is.

Severe weather puts lives at risk, especially for anyone who does not have a roof over their heads.

Please check in on your neighbors in need, and be the eyes and ears for those who could use our help the most.

Be safe out there everyone!

In addition to their generous $25,000 donation, Matson’s leaders also showed up at our men’s shelter, put on gloves, and served meals alongside our kitchen team.

Showing up to serve is what our LeaderServe program is about, and that’s why partnerships like this one matter. Mahalo to the Matson team for being on the serving line with us!

Kahauiki Village is home to folks who were once homeless. But yesterday it was home to an Easter egg hunt and kids who got to just be kids for the afternoon.

Mahalo to Sara, our Children’s Program Coordinator, and the KV residents who helped put this event together. Together, they gave our KV families a holiday worth remembering.

If you or someone you know wants to support Kahauiki Village, send us a DM.
