IHS Hawaii

IHS Hawaii The Institute for Human Services (IHS) is on a mission to end and prevent homelessness in Hawaiʻi.

Jordan helps individuals and families at IHS find permanent housing and supportive services. She’s also a lifelong hula practitioner who earlier this year started a weekly class for women and mothers at Kahauiki Village.

The class isn’t run like a traditional hālau. Jordan meets each woman where she’s at so that for one hour a week, they can reconnect with their body, each other, and Hawaiian culture. Five women are the core of the group, and one still comes back every week even after moving into permanent housing on the other side of the island.

Jordan hopes more women from the village will join and that someday their keiki will want to learn alongside them. If you’d like to support Papa Pua Kalaunu with a donation of portable studio mirrors, a stereo, or anything that helps these ladies continue, send us a DM or email.

When a last-minute event cancellation left 150 bentos without a home, 7-Eleven Hawaiʻi reached out and asked if we could use them. The timing could not have been better.

Our team is still cleaning up after Hurricane Lala, and two of our sites are still without power. So a donation like this allows our staff to focus on recovery, repairs and taking care of shelter guests instead of meal prep.

On behalf of the entire IHS ‘ohana, mahalo nui Danielle for being such a thoughtful and generous Customer Experience and Community Manager. And to 7ElevenHI your musubis and pork hash have gotten us through more shifts than we can count so we will always have a special place in our hearts for you.

“Homelessness can happen to anybody.”

Timothy Johnson, Project Manager at Kumu Ola Hou, sees the work as helping residents reconnect with the support systems they need to regain stability and become more independent.

At Kumu Ola Hou, that support comes through the staff, the environment, and the programming. It is also reflected in the relationships that form, where complete strangers can begin to feel like they have known each other for years.

That impact is what makes the work personal.

“There is nothing better than showing my daughter that I was part, in some way, shape, or form, of helping somebody get their life back together.”

As part of the Kauhale Initiative, the Village of Redemption has contributed to broader efforts that have reduced unsheltered homelessness on Oʻahu by 20%.

Hear the inspiring and hopeful stories of Eddie, a Resident Manager at the Village of Redemption, and Kaluna, a participant in the program.

After the two of them were incarcerated, they both decided to turn their lives around. Now surrounded by a community and others going through a similar journey, Eddie told us what’s different about the Village of Redemption.

The two embody how community can be the beginning of the road to redemption. Mahalo to both for sharing their stories.

For Founder’s Day this year, 80+ volunteers worked alongside IHS staff and board members across four of our sites to paint, power wash, and build, giving the spaces our shelter guests call home some much-needed TLC.

Crews built planters from recycled pallets at Kumu Ola Hou and brought fresh paint and power washing to Sumner, Kaʻaahi, and Alana Ola Pono. Hawaii News Now and the Star-Advertiser even came down to capture the day.

On behalf of the entire IHS team, mahalo nui to every church, business, and community member from across Oʻahu who showed up for our neighbors in need, and helped us honor the legacy our founders Father Claude DuTeil and his wife Tutu Bert began in 1978.

For the second year in a row, Robert J. Clancey, LTD., an ʻAiea-based clothing manufacturer, donated hundreds of pieces of brand new clothing to us.

From aloha shirts to dresses to keiki and pet clothing, these are the pieces our guests will reach for when they’re heading to a job interview, reconnecting with family, or just stepping out for a day. Mahalo Clancey team for coming back and blessing us with such generosity.

If your business wants to support our community with in-kind donations, please send us a DM.

The Hawaiʻi Institute for Hair Design came back to Kahauiki Village this week with a team of student barbers led by the school’s Director of Advanced Education, Kaleo Pahia, to give our keiki free haircuts.

A fresh cut might sound simple, but for a young person, it can change everything about how they show up in the world and carry themselves. We mahalo Kaleo and the entire Hawaii Institute of Hair Design ʻohana for making this a tradition our community counts on.

If your business or organization wants to serve our community in a hands-on way, send us a DM or email.

Most people just look away or drive past when they see someone who is homeless on O‘ahu. It’s our outreach team’s job to stop and help.

They cover urban Honolulu, the Windward coast up to Kahuku, and Leeward and Central O’ahu. When the need is a mental health crisis, a specialized team goes anywhere on the island.

If you see someone who needs their help, DM us the location and photo of the individual or encampment. From there, we will relay the message to our Director of Outreach who will connect the person or group with resources in their area.

Men’s Wearhouse Ward Village just donated hundreds of formal pieces (including dress shirts, sport coats, and ties) to our shelter guests.

For someone preparing for a job interview or reconnecting with family, showing up in clothes that fit the moment can change how the whole conversation goes. Mahalo to Sheena, James and the entire Men's Wearhouse Ward Village team for stepping up.

If your business wants to partner with us or has items that could support the folks we serve, send us a DM or email.

When our team first met Tracey at a park in Aiea, she was struggling with addiction. She told them, "I feel like I'm going to be a part of this mangrove forever." For years, that was how she saw it, and recovery felt like a long shot.

But thanks to years of patient and persistent outreach by her Case Manager Manalani, a safe place to rest at the 'A'ala Kauhale, and her own determination, Tracey moved into permanent housing earlier this year.

Today, she attends church every Sunday, is active in a recovery program, and has reconnected with her family. Tracey is living proof that healing is always possible, even when it seems out of reach.
