“The Old Guard” is the Army's official ceremonial unit and es**rt to the president, and it also provides security fo

r Washington, D.C., in time of national emergency or civil disturbance. The unit received its unique name from Gen. Winfield Scott during a victory parade at Mexico City in 1847 following its valorous performance in the Mexican War. Fifty campaign streamers attest to the 3rd Infantry's long history of service, which spans from the Battle of Fallen Timbers to World War II and Vietnam. Since World War II, “The Old Guard” has served as the official Army Honor Guard and es**rt to the President. In that capacity, 3rd Infantry soldiers are responsible for conducting military ceremonies at the White House, the Pentagon, national memorials and elsewhere in the nation's capital. In addition, soldiers of “The Old Guard” maintain a 24-hour vigil at the Tomb of the Unknowns, provide military funeral es**rts at Arlington National Cemetery and participate in parades at Fort Myer and Fort Lesley J. The black-and-tan "buff strap" worn on the left shoulder by each member of the 3rd Infantry is a replica of the knapsack strap used by 19th-century predecessors of the unit to display its distinctive colors and distinguish its members from other Army units. The present buff strap continues to signify an Old Guard soldier's pride in personal appearance and precision performance that has marked the unit for 200 years. A further distinction of The Old Guard is the time-honored custom of passing in-review with fixed bayonets at all parades. This practice, officially sanctioned by the War Department in 1922, dates to the Mexican War in 1847 when the 3rd Infantry led a successful bayonet charge against the enemy at Cerro Gordo. Today, this distinction is still reserved for “The Old Guard” alone.

New Year, new horses!

The is welcoming in the New Year by introducing the rest of our newest equestrian teammates. 🐴

Introducing Jameson!

A Morgan with a dash of quarter horse, Jameson stands about 15.3 hands tall and weighs about 1200 pounds. He is 5 years young, and his spirited nature is a testament to his youth. Qualified on swing and lead on the wagon, Jameson is the 1st Battalion Executive Officer’s favorite horse and the feeling seems to be mutual. He is always looking for carrots and popcorn as he is still a growing boy!

for next Monday to meet another new addition!

“I feel that I served with honor, dignity and respect to the mission and the Unknowns. I did this while continuing to extend the message to the public about the sacrifices made and the significant purpose this national shrine serves to each and every citizen.”

Yesterday, Staff Sgt. Damien Fraser (Badge #702), conducted his final walk at the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. Whilst serving as a Tomb Guard for 19 months, Fraser honorably conducted over 1,200 changing of the guard ceremonies. His next position will be as a drill sergeant at Fort Jackson, S.C. Join us in thanking Staff Sgt. Fraser for his dedicated service to our nation. 🇺🇸 (U.S. Army 📸 by Sgt. Laura Stephens)

Say hello to Leroy! 🐎

Leroy is a Draft Cross procured out of Tennessee and has just made his way to the wheel position in 1st squad and our ❤️! He’s a shrinking violet, but he’s warming quickly to Soldiers and visitors to the barn. about Leroy- he has a sweet tooth, although he’d never say no to a healthy apple 🍎. Standing over 16 hands tall, Leroy is a gentle giant, weighing just under a ton! He’s a perfect fit for the wheel position, although he has also excels in the swing position.

Help us Leroy and wish him luck as he takes on the sacred duty of honoring our nation's heroes.

Our military working horses serve a key role in our honorable duty of es**rting America’s heroes to their final resting place. We are extremely saddened to share that our equine teammate, Rambler, has left our ranks. After the veterinary professionals identified that an intestinal issue was causing him acute abdominal distress, they recommended that Rambler should be humanely euthanatized.

Rambler was a seasoned member of our team with 11 years of service in the Caisson Platoon. A much-loved member of first squad, Rambler served in thousands of funerals, honoring our nation’s heroes during his time in America’s Regiment. Rambler was a well-rounded teammate, having served in the swing, lead, and section pony positions. He was friendly and warm to both new and experienced riders. Rambler will be sorely missed by all of us, and we will forever treasure his service to our military and our nation.

Though we honor our Nation’s heroes daily here at The Old Guard, we feel the loss of our teammates in a very unique way. We are extremely saddened to share that our equine teammate, Rio, has left our ranks. After an extensive examination of the patient, veterinarians determined that Rio should be humanely euthanized after his injury failed to properly heal.

Rio served honorably in the Caisson Platoon for 13 years. As a consistent member of the 4th squad, he walked in over 1,000 funerals, to include that of GEN Colin Powell.

Rio will be missed dearly, and we reflect with sincere gratitude on his 13 years of honorable service to our Nation while es**rting the fallen to their final resting place.

I am the sister of a retired soldier who served with The Old Guard. He is now in a nursing home facility at age 72. I am wondering/hoping if there would be people willing to send cards to him! PM me for his address, please. Thank you for your consideration. God is good.
The weather is frightful and I wanted to thank each of you for your service. ❤❤❤❤
Hi there! Can someone provide some info on the flag used by The Old Guard, particularly when in Revolutionary dress (the light blue flag with the circle of white stars). I have been all over the internet today after seeing the flag during the Pass in Review and I cannot find anything on what this flag is. I'm assuming its the historical banner of The Old Guard but would love some education on this!
TIA!
It's just unfathomable the "iron" you folks are built of. Today is one of the most important days for you, and the duration you have to endure for "your turn" in the ceremony is awe-inspiring.
As always, Well Done, and Thank You.

Hello Honored members of the Caisson Platoon I am a former Infantry soldier with the Canadian Army with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. I am new to the group and am privilaged to be part of your page. I have a request I was wondering if anyone in the group could help me with. I collect Military coins and Mounted Unit coins mostly Police Departments. I have been searching diligently for a US Army Caisson Platoon Challenge coin but so far it has remained my unicorn. If anyone can help me with obtaining one I would be forever grateful. Or if there is any merchandise such as t-shirts or ball caps I would like to support the Unit in any way I can. Thank you for your time and Merry Christmas to all your members and thank you for the very important job you do.
To all the Men and Women in this regiment Thank you all for what you do. To all US Service men & Women God Bless You and Happy Holidays. Always in my prayers
