On Aug. 6, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law prohibiting racial discrimination in voting. It was a new day. The VRA is considered by many to be the most effective and far-reaching civil rights legislation ever enacted. However, the Shelby County v. Holder SCOTUS decision (2013) and other court rulings have greatly weakened the law. The League of Women Voters invites you to join with us in the fight to strengthen the VRA and protect every American's right to vote! This video is the livestream of the LWV Alabama 2022 Council’s forum on the “Alabama Constitution’s Racist Roots and the 2022 Recompiled Constitution Ballot Amendment.”
The audio quality isn’t ideal. But it was a very powerful presentation.
Rev Valtoria Jackson did an awesome job speaking on behalf of the Poor Peoples Campaign about the impacts on the poor and for people of color.
The historical perspectives provided by Archivist Scotty Kirkland was enlightening and gave context to how several southern states were pushing to codify white supremacy during the late 1800s-early 1900s. And Othni Lathram gave important insights to the political process in Alabama and why the ballot amendment will create a “clean baseline” and provide greater transparency in government.

2022 Republican Primary Candidate Forum for Secretary of State
Join the The League of Women Voters Alabama(LWV-AL) as we hear from the 2022 Republican candidates for Secretary of State ahead of the primary elections.
In March, 1965, after several bloody attempts, civil rights protesters marched from Selma to Montgomery, a 54-mile journey, to demonstrate against racial injustice and voter suppression. Led by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, they successfully made their way to Montgomery where they spoke out loud and clear on the capitol steps.
The fight against voter suppression continues and we march again on March 9!
LWV members across Alabama have been invited to join the National LWV and march alongside organizations such as Black Voters Matter and other groups to recommit ourselves to protecting the Vote as well as fighting to preserve Democracy itself. We will gather on Wednesday, March 9, 2022 at 8:30 AM at Mile Marker 111 Monument/Wright Chapel AME Zion Church in Lowndesboro, AL to walk a 7 mile leg of the Selma to Montgomery March. Some will make the entire journey of 54 miles March 6-11! Wright Chapel is near the site where Viola Liuzzo was murdered.
Participants need to be in place at 8:30 AM on March 9 ready to walk. You should wear your LWV regalia so everyone knows we are there in solidarity with the other organizations and the movement. Also, bring your nonpartisan signage calling for fair election, voting rights, passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights, etc! Even though the march is 7 miles, there will be several rest stops with ample opportunities to get hydrated and to catch your breath! And we will, of course, get you back to your car!
You can read more about the event and the plans by listening to the press conference below:
https://www.cbs42.com/news/local/watch-civil-rights-leaders-announce-details-of-selma-to-montgomery-march/
Let's coordinate!
Will you be there? We certainly hope so! Please send your name, cell phone number, and email address to Kathy Jones, kathy(dot)u(dot)jones(at)gmail.com so that we can send you more information about the LWV gathering location and keep you informed about events on that day.
