Manatee County participated in this year’s annual Fire Fest event at Carlton Reserve, sponsored by Sarasota County Government, to demonstrate how prescribed burns protect our communities from wildfires and maintain Florida's natural ecosystems. Besides prescribed-burn demonstrations, activities included helicopter flights with a water-bucket drop, wagon tours and a life-size gopher tortoise “burrow” (set up by our Natural Resources team) that kids could crawl through and explore.

For additional project information, please visit the project website at mymanatee.org/63rd.

Osprey nests are quite plentiful here in Manatee County—they can be found in every preserve that borders the water. In areas where there are fewer tall trees, nests can be found on tall poles that have a platform on top. Rather than starting from scratch, ospreys tend to renovate their old nests each season.

Happy birthday to Manatee County which turns 168 years old this week! This map of Manatee County, created by United Abstract and Title Insurance Company in 1926—five years after the southern part became Sarasota County—indicates which roads were asphalt paved and the location of schools, post offices and railroads. It also shows the Town of Manatee (which merged with Bradenton in 1944) and villages, including Gillett, Lorraine, Parmalee, Riley, Ft. Hamer and Edgeville.
