This week, at the Education Commission of the States, our state superintendent Tony Sanders delivered a Ted Talk of sorts -- a presentation honoring his late father, Dr. Ted Sanders. Dr. Ted Sanders served as the state superintendent of education in three states (Nevada, Illinois, and Ohio), as U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education in the George H.W. Bush administration, and as president of ECS from 2000 through 2004. He died in September of 2024. As Dr. Sanders spoke, one of his father's colleagues FaceTimed his mother so she could see the speech!

The Illinois Department of Human Rights (IDHR) is thrilled to announce the launch of the Racism-Free Schools training. This comprehensive training, developed in collaboration with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign College of Education, addresses how to prevent harassment and discrimination based on race, color, and national origin in elementary and secondary education.

This training provides teachers and administrators with essential tools and knowledge to create safer, more inclusive learning environments. The interactive training includes video insights from Illinois educators, real-life scenarios, and actionable strategies to combat racial discrimination.

The training is available for free to all public school educators through the Ed Leaders Network or directly via the IDHR website https://okt.to/h5ZEyT. This initiative supports the implementation of Public Act 103-0472 (also known as the Racism-Free Schools Law), which requires every school in Illinois to adopt a written anti-discrimination policy, train employees on how to recognize and report discrimination, and inform students and families of their rights and reporting options.

“Teaching With and About Native Peoples” is a series of professional development presentations to support K-12 educators as they implement the Native American history mandate outlined in Public Act 103-0422. These PD opportunities deepen participants’ understanding of Native American history, cultures, and perspectives through hearing from first voice perspectives and an examination of data. Participants will be equipped with practical pedagogical tools to integrate these voices into their classroom instruction.
