It’s the last birthday he’ll celebrate in uniform as he prepares for retirement this year.

“Thank you! It’s been a pleasure working here. While I’m looking forward to the home stretch of reaching my retirement, my wife is even more excited as it’s been a long haul for her.” -SFC Kilgore

WAYBACK WEDNESDAY - 99th Infantry Divsion enters "D Series" maneuvers

De Soto National Forest, MS, August 12, 1943 - Almost twelve months after notification for activation, the 99th Infantry Division entered pre-deployment maneuvers for the first time as a functioning complete unit in the War Department's Victory Training Program for 1943. Also on August 2, 1943, Maj. Gen. Walter E. Lauer assumed command of the "Checkerboard Division" at Camp Van Dorn, Mississippi.

A World War I veteran of the "Big Red One" 1st Division, Maj. Gen. Lauer would lead the division through the infamous "Louisiana Maneuvers", through pre-deployment consolidation at Camp Maxey, Texas, to deployment to the European Theater of Operations in late 1944, serving as the combat commander through Victory in Europe Day in 1945.

In his assessment of the "D Series" maneuvers, Maj. Gen. Lauer told his officers, "Gentlemen, there is a job on our hands, mighty, difficult, and terrific, but in it there is tremendous glory. Our country has placed fifteen thousand men in our hands to train -- train them well!" [excerpted from Dauntless: A History of the 99th Infantry Division by William C. C. Cavanagh, Taylor Publishing (Dallas, 1994)].

The Bergen Record newspaper has published a story about our friend PFC Angelo Sciacca, mentioning the 99th RD and using several of our photos (especially poignant are the photos of CSM Thompson cutting the cake with Angelo at our Army Ball in June, then presenting the folded Flag to Angelo's son during funeral services in July).

Police escorted a funeral procession more than 70 miles, up the Garden State Parkway, for a graveside service in Totowa.

The Ninety Niners Softball Team season came to an end in the 3rd round of the playoffs yesterday in a heartbreaking 11-10 loss to 305th APS. The Niners made a strong rally toward the end, but due to the new league changes the game was cut short due to the hour cap put on games. This was an unusual but fun season that will be remembered. The friendships established and memories made the season well worth it. We would like to thank all the players who participated this year and the support we received. Remember - it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish!!

WAYBACK WEDNESDAY - Operation CENTERBOARD I: 'Little Boy' Dropped On Hiroshima

80 Years Ago - At 0245K (UTC +10) on Aug. 6, 1945, Col. Paul W. Tibbets, Jr., and the crew of the stripped-down B-29 Superfortress 'Enola Gay' took off from the Army Air Force's 509th Composite Group's base on Tinian, Northern Marianna Islands, the execute the first atomic weapon combat mission over an enemy target. At approximately 0815J (UTC +9), bombadier Maj. Thomas W. Ferebee released the single payload of a 10,000 pound Mk1 uranium bomb, code-named "Little Boy", over the primary target of Hiroshima, Japan. At about 1,900 feet above ground, the nuclear device detonated vicinty the Aioi Bridge, unleashing a force of about 15,000 tons of TNT and heat of 7,000 degrees Fahrenheit in less than one second.

President Harry S. Truman received news of the mission while returning from the July 17 through August 2 Potsdam Conference aboard the USS Augusta. During that conference, President Truman along with Winston Churchill and Chiang Kai-shek issued an unconditional surrender proclamation to the government of Imperial Japan, declaring its "prompt and utter destruction" for non-compliance.

With no immediate official communication of surrender received, a second mission was executed by the crew of the B-29 Bockscar over its secondary target of Nagasaki on Aug. 9. Six days later on Aug. 15, Emperor Hirohito issues a statement over the radio to the citizens of Japan that the government accepted the Potsdam Declaration, referring to the two atomic bombs as the reason. About two weeks later, Gen. Douglas MacArthur presided of the signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on Sept. 2, 1945 - Victor Over Japan (V-J) Day.

For more information on the ex*****on and effects of the these missions, the 99th RD Historian recommends the linked National WWII Museum article:

On the morning of August 6, 1945, the American B-29 bomber Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
