This week students from Puget Sound Fire, Renton Regional Fire Authority, South King Fire, and Eastside Fire & Rescue braved the still cold waters of our local lakes to complete the first Rescue Swimmer Initial class of the year. These swimmers go through a grueling 4 day training curriculum designed to inoculate rescuers to the stresses and physical exertion it sometimes takes to rescue victims from varying depths of water. Being just a good swimmer wont cut it to complete this course. Students learn breathing techniques, rescue approaches and holds, equalization, and above all, water confidence.

Happy Administrative Professionals Day!

To our powerhouse team of four—thank you for keeping 15 agencies and all of our personnel organized, informed, and on track. What you manage behind the scenes is no small task, and somehow you make it look easy (most of the time 😉).

From tracking training to solving the daily “how do we make this work?” moments, you are the backbone of everything we do. We truly couldn’t do it without you.

Safety is always our priority and commitment to our students. That is why our instructors would never ask anyone to do something they wouldn't do or haven't done. Our Advanced Watercraft instructors are seen here doing a scouting mission on the Skykomish River at the infamous "Boulder Drop". With water levels here at a manageable 3900 CFS, this site provides some of the most technical training grounds on this side of the state, a perfect spot for our Advanced Watercraft class on April 20, 21st. Big thanks go out to Valley Regional Fire Authority, Enumclaw Fire Department, and Puget Sound Fire for providing the subject matter experts in this field.

This weeks Swiftwater Initial class was a special one for us and all the instructors with the Fire Training Consortium. Not only did we graduate 21 new Swiftwater technicians from Puget Sound Fire, Snoqualmie Fire Department and Emergency Management, South King Fire, King County Sheriff's Office, Renton Regional Fire Authority and Valley Regional Fire Authority. We also said good bye and happy retirement to Captain Pete Askevold who instructed his last Swiftwater class. Pete has been our lead instructor, program manager and curriculum developer for over 162 years! With over a century of knowledge passed on to hundreds of students through out the south king county region, Pete leaves some big shoes to fill! All of us at the Fire Training Consortium thank you Pete and congratulations on your retirement later this year!
