Michigan Legislative Black Caucus Celebration of Service was a great place to catch up with friends - incoming legislators and alumni, and as Historian, acknowledge those legislators of color who blazed trails before us. N'Namdi Center For Contemporary Art was a beautiful venue, and it was great to see the incoming House Speaker, Rep. Joe Tate. Thank you to my husband Sudhakar, and ally for justice, President and CEO of Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion, Steve Spreitzer, for joining me.

It has been an entire decade. My eldest is the same age as many of the victims—something I think of often, especially at milestones. My heart still breaks for the families of Sandy Hook Elementary and the Newtown, CT community. This horror should have rocked us hard enough to do something truly meaningful & legendary to prevent this kind of gun violence & community tragedy from ever happening again. Some progress has been made, but more must be done—and it shouldn’t have to take a decade.

Great news for our local industries! The Troy-based small manufacturer Becker Orthopedic Appliance Company was recently selected to receive a $17,500 grant to help them adopt Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies, per the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). Thankful to have had the opportunity to advocate for our growing community and local economy!

$13.1 million in private investment from small manufacturers.

Grant applications will continue to be accepted on a rolling basis until all funds are allocated. To learn more about the requirements of the program and to view the grant application, visit: michiganbusiness.org/industry4-0/grant.

With new Democratic leadership next year, what long-inert legislation will now pass? ⋆ Michigan Advance

Proud to see -- not one, but three! -- of my sponsored bills highlighted here, especially on key issues for my colleagues to review in the new term such as restoring rights to paid sick leave, polluter accountability, and driver's licenses for all. And while they didn’t cover the School FACT Act effort that I led, they talked about bills from the pkg that call for charter school accountability.

Drum roll pls… HD41 last Small Business of the Month award goes to Troy’s Thomas Cake Shop! Sonali, the owner, shared her story: she took her home-based business to the next level by purchasing this from another immigrant family, then persevered through COVID without any Cares Act support and continues to provide a wide range of baked goods to all! It was lovely to see customers walk in who were obviously fans and friends of the all-women team of bakers here!

As my term comes to a close, this weekend was a reminder that the sweetest moments are ones shared with constituents. I joined constituents this weekend at a few events and was honored to present BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha Michigan members a tribute to honor Shri Pramukh Swami Maharaj, a Hindu guru whose life was lived for the joy of serving others. His legacy and the events - including one with the Detroit Chapter of Sewa International USA - reminded me of the importance of unconditional love and service to others.

Great to be home after attending my first and last legislators’ conference - with great ideas to pass on to my colleagues about everything from accessing affordable broadband to addressing anti Asian American hate. Grateful to the National Council of State Legislators for bringing together Asian American state lawmakers from across the country, and to NCSL for organizing the first in-person “Quad Caucus” gathering (of Black, Hispanic, Native American and Asian American state legislators). So glad to connect with Everytown for Gun Safety Senior Advisor Becky George, Asian Pacific Islander American Vote (APIAVote) Exec. Dir. Christine Chen and so many others doing amazing work across the country!

From the Algonquin word Mishigamaa ("big lake") that our state's name is derived from to the vibrant indigenous communities active today, Native American cultures are central to Michigan. Today, let's honor these contributions to our state and nation.

How can we get a “No patient left alone” bill here in Michigan like they have in other states? It’s been almost 1 year since we have been allowed in to visit our loved ones in assisted Living and nursing homes, and sometimes ER and the hospital. They need our support and they can’t get that through a window or phone call visit. My dad needs to hold my moms hand 💗 Please help.
PLEASE contact your State Representative and ask them to co-sponsor Lilliana's Law. You can find your state representative by clicking this link: https://www.house.mi.gov/MHRPublic/frmFindaRep.aspx

THIRD TIME IS A CHARM!
This upcoming week, (possibly Thursday) Representative Ryan Berman will be reintroducing Lilliana's Law.
This law would require school districts ( public and private) to have yearly school inspections.

I'm asking everyone to reach out to their state representative to support and co-sponsor the upcoming law. representative Ryan Berman will also be sending a mass email to all state representatives. We need your help.

In one week, January 20th will be four years since Lilliana lost her life while attending a school program. A 350-pound A-framed table that was recalled fell on my three-year-old little girl. In these years I've been fighting for this not to happen to your child. Lilliana was the SECOND child to have lost her life this way. In other cases where families have lost their children were a falling flag pole, collapsed wall, and electrocution. Those were the cases I found and does not include survivors.

Please help. I can not do this alone and I would like a piece of mind sending my surviving children to school and yours.

OUR CHILDREN DIDNT DIE FROM FREAK ACCIDENTS.

MICHIGAN SAYS NO TO VOTE BY MAIL. THIS WOULD LEAD TO FRAUD.
Hello! I am reaching out as my family is in desperate need of assistance and heard this would be my best option. I have reached out to governor and rep with no progression. As well as UIA and SS. nearing 100 or more calls daily.
- have not received taxes (suppose to be coming in mail- not traceable)
- have not received stimulus (husbands portion went to child support and mine is MIA)
-have not received UIA payment ( approved yet "non monetary issue" since April)
- have not received child support
- can not get a job, dr. has me off work
- can not receive cash assistance (you would need to be part of 40 hour a week program to seek employment)
- can not get disability until dr./testing process is complete
- husband lost his job due to covid just recently- his UIA has been " approved- non monerary issue" as well
caring for a full family and less than zero income due to covid is just about crippling us. I have been keeping kooth and having faith until now.. our lease was up last month, my sons birthday is in two days, our phones are off and have no clue how to make ends meet. I have reached out to the news and will continue to try and reach any able human being who can assist.
Good to see you, State Rep. Padma Kuppa Thanks for standing up to the BLM cause today at Troy.
This post is not intended to be political at all. I agree that the Shelter in Place and closing of schools was needed at the time given the uncertainties and unknowns at the time. However, given what we know now, the purpose of this post is to advocate for the reopening of the schools in the Fall of 2020 for the following reasons.

1. Shelter in place was never designed to prevent everyone from getting exposed to COVID.

2. Shelter in place was implemented to control the capacity issues at our hospitals.

3. Currently - our health system capacity is under control.

4. Therefore, unless you are planning on sheltering in place for 2 years, we need to get used to living with Corona virus.

5. There is ZERO evidence that Coronavirus is statistically dangerous to children. The H1N1 flu is contracted at a much higher rate than Coronavirus (as to children)

6. While the teachers have done a great job with online schooling, it is not the same. The children need to go to school to learn, to socialize and to build their immune systems.

7. The larger concern is the safety of the administrative staff, teachers and employees. Obviously safety guidelines will need to be implemented and staff in high risk pools may have to stay home.

8. Even if 5-10% of the staff had to stay home for safety that is better than 100% of children being home-schooled.

Just one constituent's opinion.
When a constituent asks a valid question in a polite way it gets censored?

Interesting
Thank you for deleting my comment and not answering my question.
Thank you Representative Kuppa for keeping me out of business for another 15 days.

Can you please explain to me why legal services and real estate services can't operate in a safe manner?
