Dayville is celebrating as Chief Michael Shabenas is officially recognized as the 2025 Windham County Fire Chief of the Year. His leadership has helped our department thrive, kept our community connected, and supported first responders and veterans throughout the region. This award reflects the impact he’s had not just in our station, but on the entire community we serve. We’re grateful for you, Chief and we are so proud to stand with you.

This morning at 06:43, the Dayville Fire Company was dispatched as part of a first alarm assignment for a reported structure fire with possible entrapment at 24 Hawkins Street, in the Borough of Danielson. The address was later corrected to be 32 Hawkins Street. ET163 responded. Numerous hand lines and master streams were deployed during fire suppression efforts. The Killingly Rehab Team (service 263) also responded to the scene to provide firefighters with proper hydration, and was supplemented by the Providence Canteen. Our station was staffed with additional members to cover our district in the event of simultaneous calls. Crews were released from Danielson just prior to 11:00 and returned to the station for clean-up. We would like to thank the members of the Danielson Fire Department and its mutual aid agencies for allowing us to work hand-in-hand with them to help bring this situation under control, and appreciate all of the fine work from the men and women of the fire service in this area.

The fire is under investigation by the Killingly Fire Marshal’s Office and the Connecticut Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Introducing Marine 163, our new 1673-X4 Rescue ONE connector boat with a diver/victim rescue platform, onboard 500 GPM fire pump, and jet powered Mercury motor. Marine 1 replaces Boat 163 after several years of service. In addition to being rated for 500 GPM, the fire pump includes 1-4 inch suction intake with floating strainer, a 1 1/8 inch smooth bore tip deck gun, and 1-2.5 inch discharge.

Our members have spent the last several weeks training on the operation, use, and features of the boat in preparation for it to be placed in service.

This past week at drill, the boat supplied 70-80 psi of pressure to ET163 via 200 ft of 2.5 inch hose. ET163 then fed a blitz fire with 100 ft of 2.5 inch hose and sustained 250 GPM flow. This pump will be another asset for fire protection for difficult to reach properties on Alexander’s Lake and other local bodies of water.
