ABOUT US:
Libertalia is a radical social space in Providence, Rhode Island. Libertalia is an autonomous space for public initiative and access to media to support our community's power and encourage dialogue. It is a place where various anti-authoritarian projects may find a home free of charge. As legend has it, Libertalia was a libertarian-communalist haven on Madagascar that was home to freed slaves and indentured servants, runaways, and pirates who pledged no allegiance to states or nationalities. Rhode Island’s own pirate, Thomas Tew, had a hand in its founding. No one knows whether this pirate’s paradise actually existed or not, but our intention is to celebrate the human desire for liberty and access to safe haven in an occupied world. Today, Libertalia serves as that safe haven for the communities of Providence and all comrades who pass through. We facilitate and host a place for popular education, community projects and general assemblies in the tradition of the global social center movement from which we draw inspiration. It is our hope that Libertalia will become a valuable resource to our community and that people will establish stake in the project and participate in its continued success. This is our effort to expand our communal practice and create more radical physical spaces. Current projects based out of Libertalia include Fertilizer lending library, the Providence Free School, Icarus Providence radical mental health meetup, reading room, internet access, and workspace for the local IWW branch and RISE, our local solidarity network. A group of us have built these projects together over the past several months, and are always looking to incorporate new volunteers and collective members. The space is funded primarily by sliding scale membership dues and a sustainer program of monthly donations, but in the early stages, as we build that long-term support base, we're putting together many fundraising events, and asking for one-time donations. The establishment of anti-authoritarian spaces is vital to movements worldwide. We realize that our strength comes from the community, both local and international, and that is why we are asking for financial support to get our project going. Please show your solidarity! Any amount will help. (You can donate online at http://libertaliapvd.org/p/donate.html or contact [email protected] to learn how to donate in person.) We invite anyone that shares our vision to get involved or offer advice.
