1st Battalion, 37th Armored Regiment U.S. Army, 1st Battalion, 37th Armored Regiment, Fort Bliss, TX. Reactivated 2015 In 1943, the Army had re-designated the unit as Company A, 37th Tank Battalion.

The 1st Battalion 37th Armored Regiment is arguably the most famous tank battalion in United States Army history with a long tradition of valor, excellence, and aggressiveness stretching from World War II to today. The Battalion was constituted on 13 January 1941 in the Regular Army as Company A, 7th Armored Regiment, 4th Armored Division. On 12 July 1944, the Battalion landed at Normandy and bega

n combat operations in the European Theater of War. There it fought with great distinction in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central European campaigns. For its actions, the Bandit Battalion earned three French Croix De Guerres and a Presidential Unit Citation. Among the 37th Tank Battalion’s most notable actions were seizing crossings on the Marne, Meuse, and Moselle Rivers during the Third Army’s historic drive across France, and the relief of the 101st Airborne Division encircled at Bastogne. The most notable commander of the 37th Tank Battalion was General Creighton Abrams (commander of military operations in Vietnam and later Army Chief of Staff) who command the 37th from Normandy to the end of the World War II on his tank “Thunderbolt.” 1-37 AR draws its inspiration from his example of leadership and always holds itself to “Abrams’ Standards.” During World War II, Sergeant Joseph J. Sadowski, a tank commander earned the Medal of Honor. For his actions On 14 September 1944, Sergeant Joseph J. Sadowski’s tank was advancing with the leading elements of Combat Command A, 4th Armored Division, through an intensely severe barrage of enemy fire from the streets and buildings of the town of Valhey. As Sadowski's tank advanced through the hail of fire, it was struck by a shell from an 88-mm. gun fired at a range of 20 yards. The tank was disabled and burst into flames, however Sergeant Sadowski immediately ordered his crew to dismount and take cover in the adjoining buildings. After his crew had dismounted, Sadowski discovered that one member of his crew, the bow gunner, had been unable to leave the tank. Although the tank was being subjected to a withering hail of enemy small-arms, bazooka, gr***de, and mortar fire from the streets and from the windows of adjacent buildings, Sergeant Sadowski unhesitatingly returned to his tank and endeavored to pry up the bow gunner's hatch. While engaged in this attempt to rescue his comrade from the burning tank, he was cut down by a stream of machinegun fire which resulted in his death. The gallant and noble sacrifice of his life in the aid of his comrade, undertaken in the face of almost certain death, so inspired the remainder of the tank crews that they pressed forward with great ferocity and completely destroyed the enemy forces in this town without further loss to themselves. The heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Sadowski, which illustrated our tradition of never failing those with whom you serve. In 1990 the Bandit Battalion supported Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Its honorable service in these campaigns earned it a Valorous Unit Award. Upon redeployment to Germany, the Battalion was part of the larger drawdown of forces following the Cold War. This involved re-stationing from Bavaria to Friedberg in 1997, where the Battalion assumed some of the traditions of 1-32 AR, the original “Bandits of Friedberg,” and their successor, 4-67 AR. During the late 1990s the Bandit Battalion supported Operations in Macedonia, Bosnia, and Kosovo. The Bandit Battalion next deployed in January 2006 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, operating initially on the Syrian border training and conducting joint area security operations with Iraqi military and police forces. In May the Bandit Battalion was displaced to the Al Anbar Province tasked with securing the Provincial capital, Ar Ramadi. Upon arrival, the Task Force gallantly assaulted across the Nasir Canal and established a series of six combat outposts deep within enemy held territory. Operating from these outposts during nine months of intense combat, Task Force Bandits drove Al Qaeda from their sanctuary and inflicted grievous losses on the enemy. For these actions, the Battalion has again been nominated for a unit decoration. After a 45 day extension, the Battalion returned to Friedberg in February 2007 to deactivate. They then were reactivated in Fort Bliss in October 2008. In November 2009, the Battalion returned to Iraq for a third deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Through its performance in Kirkuk Province, 1-37 earned a Meritorious Unit Commendation. On January 11th, 2011, the Battalion was deactivated once more awaiting to be called on again. For more than sixty years, there have been American tank Soldiers in Friedberg who called themselves the Bandits. This tradition began with the 1st Battalion 32nd Armor, with whom Elvis Presley served in the 1950’s. On June 18th, 2015, the 1st Battalion, 37th Armor activates as part of 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division.

AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH – February. The Civil Rights Acts of the 1960s were great breakthroughs. Not only did they afford African-Americans legal rights that every American should have, but they also provided for enforcement of the anti-discrimination laws of the federal government. By the early 1970s, the military had instituted directives, policies, and training on race relations and equal opportunity. In honor of the African- American history month 1st Battalion, 37th Armored Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division wants to recognize the 761st Tank Battalion.
The 761st Tank Battalion was the first African-American tank battalion to go into battle. During 183 days of continuous combat, the 761st fought all over northern and central Europe, from the Battle of the Bulge at Tillet, France, to the Battle of the Rhine, eventually making it to Austria. The Army awarded the unit with four campaign ribbons: Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. In addition, the men received 11 Silver Stars, 69 Bronze Stars, and about 300 Purple Hearts. In 1978, the 761st received a coveted Presidential Unit Citation. The cost was high, however, with 36 men killed in action, 22 in November alone. They fought to defend a segregated country at the time. “They’re running into some problems, some challenges. But they were worried about their missions and about staying alive, not skin color. Abrams’ Standard!!!

In 1982, LTC Colonel Jim Noles (right) and CSM Joe Hill (left) led
1-37 Armor as Battalion Commander and Command Sergeant Major in Katterbach in Bavaria, Germany. At the time “Abrams’ Standards” were instituted.

1-37 Armor was stationed in Katterbach 5 miles from 1AD HQ in Ansbach and quickly became known as “the Palace Guards”. Jimmy Leach (B Company Commander 37th TB 1943-1944) was the Honorary Colonel and would visit. Indeed on one such visit, the entire Battalion sang “Stout Hearted Men” to Leach in the Battalion Theater. This was the 37th Armor Song Since 1941II! Leach’s eyes reportedly teared…

Some 34 Years later, (March 2017) the dynamic duo was back at it. This time they returned to "the fight" at Operation Homecoming at Fort Bliss with the same 37th Armor Unit becoming the Honorary Colonel and Sergeant Major of the Regiment while taking part at the dedication of the 37th Armor Regimental Classroom. The Niles / Hill Team remain our Honorary Regimental Leadership to this day.

FYI Since 1982 “Abrams Standards” continue in both word and deed.

37th Armor Alumni… Because it really was the best job we ever had.

Great News !!!
Greetings from your friendly neighborhood Bandit UMT. This past week was a good one for the Bandits, topped off with the 2020 Bandit Ball. It was a huge success. I was blessed to finally meet in person Kevin Seidl, from the 37th Armor Alumni. It was truly an honor and privilege to get to know someone who care so much about our heritage and our brotherhood.

Speaking of the Ball, I know there was more than a dozen who had their picture taken with CPL (P) Kent there. He very much enjoyed it. If you have a chance, please upload your picture with him to his page (see end of this message). We are looking to do a folder entitled “Friends” for all those that he loves and serves.

In addition, this is my fifth battalion and first time to get to do a left seat/right seat. Until this point, I have always arrived after my predecessor left or left before my successor arrived. I have been honored to get to assist CH Abraham Abe Christian as he becomes the new Bandit Shepherd. He will be gradually assuming more and more responsibilities. For example, later this month he will assume the 1-37 AR UMT page.

What does the concept of brotherhood mean to you? The US Army has the unique ability to define brotherhood (sisterhood), not in words, but in actions. Every day, those men and women are challenged and are sometimes put into situations where the camaraderie builds itself, and the men and women are able build each other. The uniform only lays the foundation for what brings these select, and exceptional, men and women together; it is the call to duty, the ideals, and the shared title of being an American and believing in what that means, that truly binds the servicemen and women together, across all MOSs and branches.

Family is more than blood. We’re not all born with the best families. If you’ve had a falling out with your parents or siblings, or if they’ve all passed away, it doesn’t mean that you’re alone in the world. You still have a family that loves you — they just might not be related by blood. Your real family should supportive of you. They should encourage you to follow your dreams, because they have unflinching faith that you can achieve whatever goals you set. They should believe in you even more than you believe in yourself. Your real family won’t leave your side when things get rough. They’ll hold their ground and help you in any way that they can. It doesn’t matter if you lose your job, lose your house, or lose yourself to drugs, because they’ll always be there for you.

Who have you chosen to make family? Who are your brothers and sisters in arms? Who do you trust and make yourself vulnerable? Who do you know has your back? Whose back do you have? While not every unit promotes this, I have truly experienced this with the Bandit Family. In the past nearly 3 years, I have indeed been made to feel part of a family. As I prepare to PCS this summer, 1-37 AR will always hold a dear spot in my heart and my time will be a cherished memory.

The concept of brotherhood can affect every aspect of your life. That is the theme reflected in each of our folders.

Hopefully this past week, I hope that opportunity leave helped you to “recharge your batteries”. Sometimes we need to just take a knee. We need to practice self-care. Personally, this is an area of life that I do not excel at, especially growing up with a Dad that believed it “is better to crawl in than call in”. But I am continually learning to do better. Why? I cannot care for others if I do not care for myself – at least not at peak efficiency.

What about you? Are you good at self-care? Self-care is a personal matter. Everyone’s approach will be different. It relates to what you do at work and outside of work to look after your holistic wellbeing so that you can meet your personal and professional commitments. Below are the different aspects to self-care and example strategies that other people have found useful:
• Workplace or professional
• Physical
• Psychological
• Emotional
• Spiritual
• Relationships.

After discovering the different aspects of self-care, complete the self-care plan activity below. Discover which activities work the best for you. For example, riding motorcycle may help one person whereas playing video games may help another. Your options are nearly infinite. Here are a few examples in each of these aspects so that you start seeing some of your possibilities.

Workplace or professional self-care
This involves activities that help you to work consistently at the professional level expected of you. For example:
• engage in regular supervision or consulting with a more experienced colleague
• set up a peer-support group
• be strict with boundaries between clients/students and staff
• read professional journals
• attend professional development programs.

Physical self-care
Activities that help you to stay fit and healthy, and with enough energy to get through your work and personal commitments.
• Develop a regular sleep routine.
• Aim for a healthy diet.
• Take lunch breaks.
• Go for a walk at lunchtime.
• Take your dog for a walk after work.
• Use your sick leave.
• Get some exercise before/after work regularly.

Psychological self-care
Activities that help you to feel clear-headed and able to intellectually engage with the professional challenges that are found in your work and personal life.
• Keep a reflective journal.
• Seek and engage in external supervision or regularly consult with a more experienced colleague.
• Engage with a non-work hobby.
• Turn off your email and work phone outside of work hours.
• Make time for relaxation.
• Make time to engage with positive friends and family.

Emotional self-care
Allowing yourself to safely experience your full range of emotions.
• Develop friendships that are supportive.
• Write three good things that you did each day.
• Play a sport and have a coffee together after training.
• Go to the movies or do something else you enjoy.
• Keep meeting with your parents' group or other social group.
• Talk to you friend about how you are coping with work and life demands.

Spiritual self-care
This involves having a sense of perspective beyond the day-to-day of life.
• Engage in reflective practices like meditation.
• Go on bush walks.
• Go to church/mosque/temple.
• Do yoga.
• Reflect with a close friend for support.

Relationship self-care
This is about maintaining healthy, supportive relationships, and ensuring you have diversity in your relationships so that you are not only connected to work people.
• Prioritize close relationships in your life e.g. with partners, family and children.
• Attend the special events of your family and friends.
• Arrive to work and leave on time every day.

The concept of self-care can affect every aspect of your life. That is the theme reflected in each of our folders.
