Today, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Rehabilitation (Rehab) Act of 1973 -- the first federal legislation to address access and equity for people with disabilities. Section 504 of the Rehab Act prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities by any federally funded or conducted program or activity. It applies to publicly funded workforce services—such as those provided by the nationwide network of American Job Centers overseen by the U.S. Department of Labor.
Section 504 also laid the foundation for more comprehensive legislation to come—the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was signed on July 26,1990.
