Random shoutout to another Oxford literary legend, Larry Brown. Go check out his new sculpture by Bill Beckwith in Morgan Family Park— the former location of Oxford’s Fire Station No. 1, where Brown served as a firefighter for 17 years before pursuing his writing career full-time. Beckwith also created the sculpture of William Faulkner on a bench in front of Oxford’s City Hall.

Rowan Oak’s central AC has been restored today!❄️

It’s beyond coincidence that on this day in 1962, Mrs. Faulkner installed this AC unit in her room (the day after William Faulkner’s funeral). Her husband disliked air conditioning and said that it was “doing away with the weather.” 🙃🥵

On this day in 1962, William Faulkner died at the age of 64. His funeral was held the next day in the parlor of Rowan Oak.

In a letter to Malcom Cowley in 1949, just a few months before receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature, he wrote what he had in mind for his epitaph:

“It is my ambition to be, as a private individual, abolished and voided from history, leaving it markless, no refuse save the printed books; I wish I had enough sense to see ahead thirty years ago, and like some of the Elizabethans, not signed them. It is my aim, and every effort bent, that the sum and history of my life, which in the same sentence is my obit and epitaph too, shall be them both: He made the books and he died.”
