JULY GENERAL MEETING RECAP - At our general meeting this past Sunday, July 14, 13 members in good standing debriefed of Birmingham DSA’s past electoral organizing, and discussed how we want to do electoral and legislative organizing going forward.
As part of this debriefing/discussion, we grappled with a number of questions: What do we want our endorsement process to look like going forward? How do we want to organize around candidates we endorse? Do we want to recruit candidates, and, if so, from where do we want to recruit them? How do we want to engage with elected politicians beyond just elections?
Join our discussion and find more at bhamdsa.org/calendar!
Our AFROSOC Member Section has been holding discussions about what Afro-socialism is. More importantly, how can we achieve that goal in Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and across Alabama. WE DID IT, PERIOD: At our Street Solidarity action this past Sunday, June 23, at 12PM in Linn Park, we distributed a Tex-Mex-themed warm meal, period products, and clothes to 45 of our neighbors!
Street Solidarity is our Mutual Aid Working Group's program to build solidarity with and become a material and informational resource to working-class people who are homeless, houseless, tenuously housed, and facing food insecurity. At least once a month, Birmingham DSA members and other volunteers plan and prepare a well-balanced meal, hygiene products, clothing, and more to distribute to approximately 50 of our neighbors.

HOUSING SECOND? NO, HOUSING FIRST: Birmingham DSA's Mutual Aid Working Group want to know if you're interested in being a part of a reading group for the Deborah K. Padgett book "Housing First: Ending Homelessness, Transforming Systems, and Changing Lives."
According to the publisher, this 250-page book “is the first to chronicle the story of Housing First, a paradigm-shifting evidence-based approach to ending homelessness that began in New York City in 1992 and rapidly spread to other cities nationally and internationally.
“The authors report on the rise of a 'homeless industry' of shelters and transitional housing programs that the HF approach directly challenged by rejecting the usual demands of treatment, sobriety and housing readiness.
According to the publisher, “the book traces the history of homelessness and the rapid growth of the publically funded homeless industry, an amalgam of religious and philanthropic organizations, advocacy groups, and non-profits that were insufficient to stem the tide of homelessness resulting from dramatic reductions in affordable housing in the 1980s and continuing to the present day.”
We’re tentatively reading this book in four sessions. We’re looking to offer one set of sessions on Wednesdays starting July 17, then going to July 31 and August 14 and 28. We’re looking to offer another set of sessions on Sundays starting July 21, then going to August 4 and 18 and September 1.
All sessions will include a Zoom option.
Interested? Fill out our form at bhamdsa.org/resources. 🤝

Yesterday, at Alabama Public Library Service's board meeting in Montgomery, our co-chair Jason spoke in opposition to code changes that would DEFUND our libraries who don't ban LGBTQIA+/racial justice books. The Alabama Public Library Service (APLS) will likely decide on these code changes at their May 16 board meeting. Want updates on how we're building worker power to stand up to politicians in Montgomery? Sign up for our e-mail bulletin at bit.ly/bhamdsabulletin. 📚
