County Executive David Crowley

County Executive David Crowley David Crowley is the Milwaukee County Executive. Growing up in a working-class family in Milwaukee’s 53206 neighborhood, David was no stranger to hardship.

As a lifelong Milwaukee resident, County Executive David Crowley knows as well as anyone that Milwaukee County is truly a tale of two counties. He has lived the pain and struggle that many in our communities face every day, and he knows the joy of bringing people together to conquer those struggles. The fundamental tenet of Executive Crowley’s administration is to build bridges to bring people tog

My involvement with Milwaukee County goes back to my time on the Youth Commission. It was a role that opened my eyes to the power and potential that every person, even young people, in our community has to offer. Today’s youth should have the opportunity to realize their same power and have an active voice in County government.

To focus on Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week, I gave students at Ronald Reagan High School - Milwaukee a mental health assignment. Watch online as students answer my questions, share a video they’ve created about the supportive resources they’ve found in the community and talk about what else they have been doing to bring awareness to mental health issues.

This is incredibly important work that we need to continue to strengthen and address the mental health needs of our community.

The time is now to come together and have some real conversations about what our community needs. Together we can bring an end to senseless violence and focus on unlocking the true potential in all our neighborhoods.

When it comes to keeping Milwaukee County safe, we have to treat both the symptoms and the root causes of the challenges facing us. It’s going to take all of us to make sure our family, friends and neighbors know where they can turn to for help and a sense of community.

The challenges we face are serious, but they are not insurmountable. We have an opportunity in front of us to transform our neighborhoods through strong community support that meets the needs of everyone – no matter what zip code they live in.

So, lets come together, support one another, and make sure that those in need are getting the help they require. Together, we will get through these tough times and the future of Milwaukee County will be brighter than ever before.

Month of Vision Panel Discussion

May is the Month of Vision for Milwaukee County. Our theme this year is Emergence: Moving Vision into Reality. I recently joined a discussion with Milwaukee County employees regarding diversity, inclusion and the affects on professional and personal life.

As a community of people from diverse backgrounds, we have a tremendous opportunity to combine our strengths and also identify our deficiencies to create a better, stronger, and healthier community.

Milwaukee Health Care Partnership investigates inequities

Milwaukee has been ranked in the past as the worst city in the United States for Black people to live in, with disparities in socioeconomic indicators such as health and income being a long-standing issue.

In recent months, County Executive David Crowley has focused on the effects the COVID-19 pandemic has had on those gaps, as well as potential solutions to bridge those divides. Read more:

Milwaukee County hospitals and health systems plan to use the results of a recent assessment and survey to address the area's public health challenges.

I had a great morning at the Boy Scouts of America Leadership breakfast. The fundraiser supports youth development programs that build leadership, values, life skills, and self-esteem in youth. This makes programs such as Learning for Life and Multicultural Scouting possible for kids in central city neighborhoods.

AI fights discrimination: Milwaukee County team identifies inequity in local policies with SAS tech

"The emergence of explainable AI allows us to better understand how seemingly innocuous policies may lead to bias in practice. Together, we can use this innovation in algorithms to affect truly positive change in the communities in which we live."

This is the kind of data-led innovation that can help change the trajectory of our community, and aligns with the vision that by achieving racial equity, Milwaukee County will be the healthiest county in Wisconsin.

Transportation: No Good Options For County Transit

This story illustrates the limits on local government funding in Wisconsin.

Milwaukee County Transit System is a critical service for residents. There has been hard work done to make the transit system faster, more convenient, and more accessible for everyone.

But we’re limited in how we can meet needs because MCTS is a non-mandated service. In addition, we may face additional reductions in mass transit aid from the state in the upcoming budget.

Milwaukee County has a plan, and we are being proactive, through our work on the local option sales tax. Go to https://www.moveforwardmke.com to learn more about that work.
https://urbanmilwaukee.com/2022/05/09/transportation-no-good-options-for-county-transit/

Facing huge shortfall, MCTS can only balance budget with harmful or unpopular changes, report finds.

Digital equity is an important element for Milwaukee County. Access to both the internet and devices to connect are integral in furthering citizens' education, careers, and opportunities. Computer literacy is no longer an option, it is essential in the digital age.

Congratulations to Digital Bridge and for earning digital educational grants to help support digital education, access and affordability in Milwaukee.

Thank you to Charter Policy for your contribution to this important part moving toward digital equity in Milwaukee County.

We are thankful to Milwaukee Real Estate Foundation for having the initial vision to undertake this project and for realizing their eventual limitations in carrying-out the vision. And extend our appreciation to Irgens for carrying the project forward.

05/05/2022

For a long time, I’ve recognized HWY 175 as one of those divides that separates communities from one another – and separates residents from both opportunities and amenities.

Residents on one side of the roadway are cut off from one of the County’s most recognizable parks: Washington Park. You have to go almost a mile out of your way just to enjoy this neighborhood green space.

We can take a different approach than we have in the past by making sure community voices are included as we work to reimagine what transportation infrastructure looks like in that neighborhood.

This is a chance to enhance economic opportunity, not diminish it. Working with our partners in the business community is how we can make sure our region is getting the most value out of reimagining transportation infrastructure.

It is an exciting time to be working on this issue. We have a chance to update our transportation infrastructure and dismantle the barriers that divide communities and reinforce inequality.

As a two-time alumni of Public Allies, I understand what it means to step outside of your comfort zone and to learn something new about yourself and your community's needs. This is a program that helped me become who I am today. Milwaukee County has always been centered around equity during my administration, and the Public Allies experience is important because they will be picking up the mantle. One thing that Public Allies taught me is the importance of Asset Based Community Development.

Thank you to Public Allies and AmeriCorps for providing this meaningful roundtable discussion and to my panelists AmeriCorps CEO Michael D. Smith and Sonali Nijhawan, Director AmeriCorps State and National.
