This makes a very important point…
My dad never complained about how we did things.
That's what his caregiver told me, after he'd been receiving care for eight months. "He never says anything. He's very easy."
I've thought about that a lot since. Because "easy" in caregiving sometimes means content. And sometimes it means a person has quietly stopped believing their preferences matter.
The difference is hard to see from the outside. But the person experiencing it knows the difference.
If you're caring for a parent right now - or if you're the one receiving care - I want to ask you something:
When did you last have a real conversation about how they want to be helped? Not a logistics conversation. Not a medical update. A conversation about what feels okay and what doesn't?
Most families never have it. Not because they don't care - because it doesn't occur to them that it's missing.
It's not too late to have it. And it's a shorter, simpler conversation than you'd expect.
