The library has extended hours this week to help support your studying needs–including Saturday hours. Also remember the Writing & Research Center (https://wou.edu/writingctr), on the first floor of Hamersly is your one-stop shop for help with those final papers. Good luck with your finals prep this week!

If you’ve been to the library this week, you might have noticed the “26” banner now hanging in the lobby. The banner is from the WOU Archives, from the Class of 1926’s commencement ceremony. 🎓 We put it up to celebrate this year’s graduating class of 2026! 🧑‍🎓🥳️

Even though the phone booth stuffing trend, seen in today's photo, peaked in the late 1950s, these 8 (or 9?) WOU students proved that a good laugh with friends makes for lasting memories. This pic was found in the pages of the 1968 edition of The Grove, held in the WOU Archives.

to a 1970s outdoor concert. Performers played on the music building's patio while the audience enjoyed the warm evening on the lawn. Dr. Edgar H. Smith, Professor of Music, helped plan the 1958 building and the 1976 fine arts building. For the first year of what we now call Rice Auditorium, Prof. Smith arranged a series of professional music, theater, and dance performances. The community loved it, making the series a campus favorite! In 1979, President Leinwand honored this arts advocate by renaming the building Smith Hall and the series the Smith Fine Arts Series. This year, we’re excited to end the season with Taimane, a genre-morphing ukulele virtuoso and composer. Don’t miss out—tickets are still available! Get them here: wou.edu/smith/

From 1912 until her retirement in 1931, Jessica Todd, was a presence and guide for female students. Often described as loyal, but strict, she quickly recognized the importance of providing campus housing for women and helped secure funds to build what would become her namesake building, Todd Hall. In this photo, she is standing on the porch of the Senior Cottage, built with frugally saved funds from the dorm construction. photo courtesy of the WOU Archives.

This was inspired by a find in the depths of the university archives: a beautiful repeating pattern of campus history. These detailed red-ink architectural sketches by Scott Gavin are two examples of several that capture classic campus buildings (including Campbell Hall, Gentle House, the Instructional Technology Center, the Campus Center Bookstore, and Dormitories), and are all printed on a single sheet of parchment. The 1986 drawings serve as a time capsule of the landmarks that have defined the student experience for generations. Which of these campus landmarks holds a favorite memory for you? Let us know in the comments! photo courtesy of the WOU Archives.
