On Tuesday, students from The Commodore Corner and Granby High School attended the culminating Rotary luncheon of the ongoing Career Visitation Partnership between NPS High Schools and the Norfolk Rotary Club. Each year, Norfolk High School students are selected to shadow a Rotarian at a career visitation of their choosing! These visits allow students to gain hands-on knowledge of potential careers, make connections, determine choices, and for one student this year, be offered a job. This year students visited maritime diving centers, ODU engineering labs, EVMS medical school, the Virginia Zoo, realty companies, schools, veterinarian offices, and a host of other career options. Upon completing their visitations, students are asked to write an essay reflecting on their experience; the top four essayists are rewarded $100 gift cards and are asked to read their essays to the Rotarians at the luncheon while snippets from the other essays are read throughout the program.

Pictured are this years' winners along with Rotary Leaders: Rotary President Laurie Harrison, Puneeth Bheeseetty, Trent Wagers. Fiona John, and Noelle Searing, and Rotary Career Visitation Sponsor, Bob Heely

is thankful for our community partners, so we're recognizing them on social media. This month: The International Longshoremen’s 1248 Union!

The International Longshoremen’s 1248 Union is committed to improving the lives of its members and families. Each year the longshoreman provides scholarships for the children from their families and to the community. For eight years, the longshoreman have selected schools in the Hampton Roads community to donate bikes for families of students who would not necessarily be able to experience biking adventures due to limited funds. Thank you to the International Longshoremen’s 1248 Union for supporting healthy lifestyles and making our students smile.

Middle School students at Southside STEM Academy at Campostella just wrapped up two weeks of swim lessons for FREE at the Blocker Norfolk Family YMCA.

The lessons are part of a program called , which provides water safety skills and life guarding training to underserved communities. The scholarships are fully funded through donations from POOLCORP.

The company believes the experience of enjoying the water should be universal, which was no doubt evident by the smiles, laughs, and enthusiasm SSAC Scholars displayed!

We are so thankful to the Blocker Norfolk Family YMCA and POOLCORP for this opportunity and can’t wait to share with even more NPS’ students in the future!
