Everyone makes mistakes, and sometimes, people just need a break. Having a perpetual line of people going to jail for committing the same crimes doesn’t serve the community. Our goal is not only to protect the community at large but to help people who need help by getting to the root of the problem and offering second chances when that is a viable option.

Our office has many people dedicated to providing pretrial services to families and children to support them and address needs such as attending school and child support enforcement. Taking care of families and children is a responsibility we take seriously. The focus in the juvenile system is rehabilitation while taking into consideration public safety. Before a case even reaches a judge, we have programs to begin the rehabilitation process through counseling or other support services a child may need. We can often get to the root of the problem before the case reaches a judge. We take great care to respect the values of the community.

2022 VOICE for Victims' Rally
During the National Crime Victims' Rights Week, Voices of Innocent Citizens Empowered Support Group (VOICE) held its 17th Annual VOICE for Victims' Rally at Bouligny Plaza in New Iberia. VOICE is committed to raising awareness, providing information, and supporting victims of crimes. #victims #Justice #healing

ADA Spotlight: Alister Charrier
Our office listens to victims. We actively seek the input of those we seek justice for as to how cases will be resolved. Every case is different. Every defendant is different. Every victim is different. We have the honor to make a difference in the communities we grew up in. We have a duty to prosecute cases we can prove beyond a reasonable doubt, but we also have a duty not to prosecute others. We seek alternate avenues to charging people with crimes where it makes sense and give a voice to the victims. #victims #makeadifference #community

ADA Spotlight: Craig Colwart
Our district attorney’s office only has one policy, and that’s to do the right thing. We screen all of our cases and decide what to charge and what not to charge. We have social programs. We trust our DAs to make the right decision, whether it be in a parish, city, civil or juvenile court. #justice

Victim Services Program
Our Victim Services Program's mission is to ensure that all victims of crime are treated with dignity, respect, courtesy and sensitivity. Victims will be given the information, knowledge, assistance and opportunity necessary to participate actively and effectively within the criminal justice system. #Justice

ADA Spotlight: Dean Wattigny
We are in a position where we represent the government and the people as a whole. We inform people about the law and the process to help people follow the laws correctly. We were recently involved with a 100-year-old dispute between Vermillion Parish and Iberia Parish over boundary lines. We were able to reach a compromise and establish a boundary passed by resolution. Finally, settling an issue this old was crucial for school zones, voting, 911 calls and police. #justice

ADA Spotlight: Jennifer Reasoner
Our end goal is to do right by the victims. We try to be as fair as possible and do everything the right way. Our diverse team joins together to get the best results they can and do the best they can for the community. It is not a responsibility we take lightly as we seek justice for victims.#Justice

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays
Best wishes for the holidays and health and happiness throughout the coming year from everyone at the 16th Judicial District Attorney's Office. #Christmas #NewYear #Justice

Halloween 2021
Nothing is better than celebrating Halloween with the 16th JDA family in the three parishes. Wishing everyone a fun Halloween filled with magical surprises, a charming atmosphere, delicious desserts, and lots of candies! #Halloween #Halloween2021 #halloweenparty #halloweendecor

Every case that comes through the 16th District Attorney’s office is the most significant thing that has happened in a victim’s life. Each case is unique and is evaluated based on every factor possible to do the right thing. Our office explores every avenue to keep people out of jail while focusing on getting justice for the victims. #Justice

ADA Spotlight: Mason Hebert
People commit drug crimes to support an addiction or sell drugs to make ends meet. By looking at the facts and determining the best course of action for the individual and the community, our office can seek justice while finding a way to bring the individual back as a functional member of society. #justice

ADA Spotlight: Cynthia Spadoni
Securing convictions is about obtaining justice for crime victims, being a voice for the victims in court, and finding the most just resolution for everyone involved, not just about incarcerating people. #Justice

ADA Spotlight: W. Claire Howington
After the guilty verdict, a defendant has a right to an appeal and other post-conviction filings. Our appellate department works hard representing our office in post-conviction matters and in ensuring that justice is done in each case #Justice

The Civil Division of the 16th District Attorney's Office is responsible for representing every public board, commission, committees, councils, authorities, agencies, and parish governments in the 16th Judicial District that do not have their own attorneys. For example, we defend the parish governments from lawsuits and file lawsuits on behalf of the parish governments. This is just one of the many things that the District Attorney's office does to serve the people of the 16th Judicial District. #CivilDivision

The 16th Judicial District Juvenile Assessment and Service Center (JASC)
The 16th Judicial District Juvenile Assessment and Service Center (JASC) was developed to provide an evidence-based rapid response to juveniles in the district with status offenses and delinquency offenses. Referrals to the JASC are made by law enforcement partners within three days of a youth’s arrest. Parents can also refer a child to the JASC if the child is displaying ungovernable behavior. Youth referred to the JASC are assessed and based on assessed risks and needs and the youth’s offense, a plan is developed consisting of targeted services and interventions, community service, specialized classes, and restitution. JASC Case Managers monitor and support the youth throughout the intervention process. This assessment and intervention process is important because assessments often reveal that youth who have offended have undiagnosed mental health issues, substance use problems, unresolved trauma, as well as other problems. These risk factors, if left unaddressed, could result in future re-offending. #JuvenileJustice
