Ms. Torres' class had a blast working on their final project this year - making a piñata!

The origins of the piñata can be traced back to the Aztec Empire around the 14th century. The Aztecs had a tradition of honoring their gods by filling a small, feather-covered pot with treasures and hitting it repeatedly with a stick until all the contents fell at the feet of a statue.

The pot was often shaped like a bull or other animal and was filled with offerings such as maize, fruits, and flowers.

The traditional star-shaped piñata still holds significance today, with its seven spikes representing the seven deadly sins that must be destroyed – hence why we break piñatas. In some Latino cultures, the piñata is broken on Christmas Eve, while in others, it is broken at birthday parties or other celebrations.

Although it has lost its religious character, the piñata remains an important part of our culture today. It is a symbol of joy, celebration, and togetherness, bringing people of all ages and backgrounds together to share in the fun.
---------------------------------------

A sweet surprise from Girl Scout Troop 409! 🍪 Each year while selling cookies, the girls collect donations, and this year they used those donations to purchase boxes of cookies to share with their teachers. Thank you, girls, for your kindness and generosity! Your thoughtful gesture was greatly appreciated!
--------‐------------------

Congratulations to Mrs. Tracey Lawton for being recognized by the Northwest Illinois Principals Association (IPA) as a 2025-2026 recipient of the IPA Leadership Award.

Mrs. Lawton has proudly served the Rochelle District for 32 years, and her impact can be seen throughout the school community. As an 8th grade teacher, she is a strong and steady leader who always puts students first. She holds her students to high expectations and believes every child can succeed. In her classroom, students are challenged to work hard, think deeply, and do their best every day.

Outside of the classroom, Mrs. Lawton gives her time to supervise sporting events and has led the yearbook committee, helping students celebrate important memories from their middle school years. She is also known for her love of dogs, detailed stories, and her daily Diet Coke, which bring a bit of joy and personality to her busy days.

Mrs. Lawton has a true passion for helping students become strong writers. She teaches them how to organize their ideas, use evidence, and express themselves clearly. She pushes them to improve while also encouraging them to believe in their abilities. Many students leave her class feeling more confident and prepared for high school. Her leadership, dedication, and long service to Rochelle make her very deserving of the Illinois Principal Association Leadership Award.
