City of Norfolk Government Official page for the City of Norfolk, Virginia www.norfolk.gov It was named a 2016 All-America City by the National Civic League.

Norfolk, Virginia is the most dynamic, authentic, urban waterfront community in America. It is a city of some 247,189 residents and more than 100 diverse neighborhoods. It is the cultural, educational, business and medical center of Hampton Roads, hosts the world's largest naval base, the region's international airport and is one of the busiest international ports on the East Coast of the United St

ates. Founded in 1682, Norfolk grew up on the water, and its miles of lake, river and bay front are central to many of its neighborhoods. The city's popular logo -- an elegant young mermaid, which can be spotted in outdoor sites from Downtown to Ocean View -- symbolizes 300 years of maritime and naval heritage and its modern reputation as a city on the move. Attractions -- such as the battleship U.S.S. Wisconsin, a salute to the city's long-standing relationship with the Navy, Nauticus, the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, and the new Cruise and Celebration Center dot Norfolk's easily-walked downtown waterfront. Here, tugboats and visiting cruise ships share the waters with sailboats and merchant ships. The waterfront is also home to Town Point Park, a recently refurbished green space that houses summer festivals, fountains, walkways, and tributes to the City's naval history. Other treasures -- The Chrysler Museum, Norfolk Botanical Garden and the Virginia Zoological Park -- are close by. Norfolk is home to the Port Authority. Norfolk-Southern Railway. The Virginia Symphony. Old Dominion University. Eastern Virginia Medical School. Norfolk State University, Tides baseball and the Admirals hockey teams, state of the art research facilities, shipping companies and an exuberant arts and cultural community. So join us, won't you? Pull up a porch swing, talk to neighbors and welcome to Norfolk. There's much to celebrate! We would love to welcome you to our community, where life is celebrated daily. Come home to Norfolk now. Notice anything different about Norfolk's illuminated holiday skyline this season? The holiday lights on 17 City of Norfolk's Downtown buildings and facilities are shining brightly AND more efficiently thanks to an LED upgrade. 💡

Three miles of lights - that's 16,000 individual bulbs - were replaced this fall to help reduce energy usage for many seasons to come.

Our Norfolk employees not only serve the community at work but also volunteer their time to utilize their experience. Scott Mahone, from the Norfolk Department of Emergency Preparedness & Response, volunteers with the American Red Cross to teach safety preparedness to children in schools in Norfolk. This program teaches kids how to prepare for emergencies at a young age and share that knowledge with their families at home.

It's Day 2 of VA , , and today we want to make sure you know what makes a blizzard and what you should do if one occurs.

US National Weather Service Wakefield VA states a blizzard consists of:
❄️Blowing Snow
🌬️35 + Winds
🌫️≤ 1/4 Mile Visibility
⏲️For 3+ hours

During a blizzard, don't travel; however, if you must, make sure you have a winter survival kit.

A winter survival kit should have:
☑️Blankets/sleeping bags.
☑️Flashlight with extra batteries.
☑️First-aid kit.
☑️High-calorie, non-perishable food.
☑️Extra clothing to keep dry.

Fun fact 🧐 Did you know that falling snow isn't necessary for a blizzard? A blizzard that results from the snow that has previously fallen is called a Ground Blizzard!

With temperatures getting colder, here are a few tips to keep in mind before you get on the road 🛣️:

✅Drive Slowly: Reduce your speed in inclement weather conditions to avoid accidents and skidding.
✅Avoid Distractions: When driving, give your full attention to the road. Avoid using your cell phone or eating.
✅Increase Distance: This will give you enough time to slow down if you lose control of your vehicle.
✅Inspect Your Tires: Check the pressure and tire tread for traction.
✅Check Your Wiper Blades: Make sure windshield wipers are in good condition.
✅Car Visibility: Ensure that headlights, brake lights, turn signals, emergency flashers and interior lights are in proper working order.

Coming together and giving back is a wonderful way to make the holiday season special.

The community from Saint James HCOCD donated several Thanksgiving baskets to senior residents served by our Department of Human Services.

Church volunteers and some Norfolk State University student volunteers packed up the boxes full of everything needed to make a nice holiday meal and the DHS Adult Services team delivered them to senior clients across the City.

Norfolk's Department of Human Services' wants to make sure seniors feel loved and included over the holidays and every day.

If a senior loved one is in need of support, connect with Adult Services at www.norfolk.gov/2559/Adult-Services or by calling (757) 664-6333.
