To be totally honest, Matilda Joslyn Gage wasn't worried about birthright citizenship--that wasn't an issue until the current President. She was concerned about states' rights vs. national rights, the ongoing issue of the Civil War, and whether or not the federal government would protect women's right to vote when a state could remove that right. But it seemed like a good quotation for today.
(BTW, she was proud of being from Fayetteville, and never said she was from Syracuse, which many of us do today.)
